Trump wanted Ukraine to just say there were questions about Hunter's activities and announce an investigation. He wanted the US state election officials to say there were questions about the 2020 election and should be investigated...then he and the Rs would take it from there.

And it's not just Presidents and President's families. Lots of non-political people secure employment because they 'know someone who knows someone'. I got several jobs as a result of having some relationship with an employee of a company who recommended me for a job in the same company.
