Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff under Donald Trump, is "the central witness" in the Department of Justice's (DOJ) probe into the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to former U.S. attorney and legal analyst Harry Litman.
The investigation, being headed up by special counsel Jack Smith, is among the numerous legal battles facing Trump as he attempts to mount a 2024 bid for the presidency. Last week, a grand jury voted to indict Trump in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, another probe by the DOJ, resulting in 37 federal criminal chargesthe first in United States history to be leveled against a former president. Trump has consistently asserted his innocence in all of the cases against him, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
Prior to the news of that indictment, reports emerged that Meadows had spoken under oath after being subpoenaed as part of Smith's two investigations, including the probe into the Capitol riot and Trump's broader attempt to subvert democracy and overturn the 2020 presidential election. Due to his proximity to the former president during the time that this scheme was allegedly hatched, Meadows is considered by legal experts to be a vital witness for that investigation.

(115,451 posts)The Judge will only highlight the criminality of January 6th by holding up the espionage case. As the facts come out about January 6th, any delay in the Mar-a-Lago case will only shine the light more brightly on the stolen documents case.

(24,302 posts)We've known this for a while and the fact Meadows wasn't charged confirms this.
Knowing how tenacious Smith is, I don't think he let Meadows off without the full goods being shared. As in, there will be testimony from Meadows saying that Trump order him to gather classified materials that could be valuable to Trump. Maybe even Trump giving him a list of what he wanted.
Anbd make no mistake, Trump didn't write this list himself, he doesn't know the first thing about intelligence documents. Somone told him what would be the most sensitive and therefore valuable things to steal.
And I think we see Meadows take ths tand in the trial. People are acting like the indictment is a complete accouinting of the evidence, it isn't, it's just a basic framework and all of the supporting evidence is what will be presented at trial.
But all of that leads me to what I've been saying for a bit, I think Smith indicts Trump in other venues too. If Trump ordered Meadows to commit crimes at the White House, Smith has an indictment in the works in a DC court. If some of the crimes were at Bedminster, a New Jersey indictment is coming too. And these are just the stolen documents crimes, there will be a totally different indictment for Trump in DC for January 6th. Yes, I believe that Smith could be prosecuting 3 or 4 different cases against Trump in 3 or 4 different venues.
