(298 posts)The government of the bible belt with its unbridled hate has essentially made the bible belt completely off-limits for me. I'd rather go to Saudi Arabia than the bible belt, at least the State Dept. might bail my ass out and get me to safety if things get hairy. I feel for my fellow LGBT people and Dems who are in those states.

(6,927 posts)they can't put a bumper sticker on their car or wear a t-shirt without fear of being assaulted. I have a friend who is flamboyant in his gayness. It's who he is. He refuses to visit his brother in Alabama. Apparently he has been beaten and left for dead before... twice.

(30,497 posts)but these things have happened in bright blue states as well. I just don't think one can, or should attempt to negatively stereotype large segments of society, especially in extremely negative ways, i.e."evil"...I think it's lazy and potentially dangerous.

(6,927 posts)in the time he spent there... his youth and visits from college... he always felt as if he couldn't be who he was. He would get bullied EVERYWHERE for just "walking his walk". Like i said, Flamboyant. He has lived here in Mass for almost 20 years and he says has never had anyone threaten violence to him like he had to deal with every day IN HIS LIFE while he lived there. I understand what you're saying. Of course there are kind and considerate people down south and in the "bible belt". But the reality is that LGBTQ+ people are threatened there to a much greater degree. Denying that doesn't help anyone. If you are there and an ally, i appreciate you.

(30,497 posts)I certainly recognize the differences among the various areas of the country. The South, much of the West and Midwest DO tend to be more conservative, so I think your friend did a wise thing in relocating to Massachusetts. Hell, I'm a straight white woman and I wouldn't want live in a conservative area either.
You have a good heart, druidty33. Your compassion for your friend shines throughout your posts.

(76,977 posts)...Florida is not a dependent state to it's citizens & Texas is low dependency for their state government.
A little surprised given all the military spending, but the numbers are what they are.

(3,290 posts)How many projects like the one Brett Favre was involved in are funded using blue state tax dollars? What percent of money allocated to help their residents gets siphoned off to the well-connected in these states?
It seems to me there should be better accounting and a better process for how outcomes are measured. After all, red states complain all the time that spending money on the poor is wasteful - but if Favre can get millions to build a volleyball arena, how much other money is spent lining their pockets?

(103,323 posts)The new R super majority has stockpiled alot of the Covid relief funds and are trying to find ways for it to land in the pockets of the wealthy rather than do anything to benefit the rest of the residents here. Seriously, they haven't spent more than 10% of what the state received for Covid relief programs, the rest is sitting in some holding place where they have to change the state constitution to gain access to it but they will keep it unavailable for the people of the state because they want it all to land in their personal bank accounts instead.
There are NO state social safety net programs that are not federal programs with federal funding.
I suspect it is similar in other poorly governed states.

(8,710 posts)to determine that red states rely on blue states "for their state spending".
Florida & Texas, for example, get more in federal money than the federal taxes paid due to having so many military bases. But that isn't state spending.

(3,323 posts)Florida and Texas aren't great examples and are less dependent than some blue states.
For example, Vermont, Connecticut and Michigan and Hawaii are more dependent on federal $. Texas and Minnesota are about
the same.

(33,424 posts)Including two red ones, Utah and Nebraska.
Indeed, a January report from the SUNY Rockefeller Institute of Government found that just eight states gave more to the federal government in 2018 than they received in federal spending: New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Colorado, Minnesota, Utah and Nebraska.

(15,359 posts)democrats, but that wasn't his job. When the right was demanding more spending cuts from Clinton, he would say to whoever was on the right, "okay, you go first. What federal programs in your state are you willing to cut?" They would never give him an answer. Usually, they would say something like it was their job to get their states share of what federal spending there was.
