I've been wondering "What will it take" for the GOP and MAGA supporters to finally "See the light". Like I did years ago as a fiscal conservative who was a Republican. My evolution was a process and I've voted "best candidate" for the last twenty plus years. I've voted both parties. I've educated myself, learned to research data and have focused on actual facts over rhetoric.
The MAGA folks today don't seem to be able to comprehend reality. They drank the Kool Aid of the GQP and they're just oblivious. Can ANYTHING make them see the light?
I can totally see the GOP not doing anything to fix Social Security. I can totally see a benefits cut of 25% at some point in the future. Is that what it will take? Suddenly everyone on Social Security having their checks reduced. That's the GQP goal after all.
Would they even realize what happened though? Would they comprehend WHO is responsible? Would they be able to formulate the logical factual answer? I have doubts. Stupid is as stupid does... and these people are just stupid.

(42,770 posts)arguing with them and stop implying/saying they are stupid. That's on family level tho.
But I *think* it's happening on a grand scale a little bit now, do you? Just because people are tiring of hitting the brick wall?

(11,176 posts)they have been played.
In 1968, George Wallace carried five Southern states - Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi but you would be hard pressed to find many people that admit they voted for him because racism is not acceptable anymore for most people.
Mark my words - in 10 years it will be hard to find anyone that admits voting for Trump.
Why? Because admitting they voted for him would be admitting he made fools of them. One trait Americans have is not admitting their mistakes....Civil War, Vietnam, Iraq are good examples.

(11,176 posts)What is really depressing to me is how many GOP Moms are joining the conspiracy crowd. I didn't expect that.

(42,770 posts)Right. Will have to be something that directly affects their pocketbook. And that's not likely to happen with a Dem Senate & Prez.

(11,176 posts)for centuries and the GOP has weaponized faith for its political goals. The party that claims to support Christian values has developed a twisted ideology where the mention of God has become a license for injustice and to avoid being held responsible for their actions. In reality it is damaging to both government and religion (in my opinion).

Do it yourself.
I got mine. Go get yer own.
Dont expect any help. Cuz that means youre a lazy moocher. No handouts!
Its just sad. And the saddest thing is how desperately they try to convince you how Christian they are.

(32,840 posts)that every red state takes in more from the federal government than it pays in. Blue states subsidize red states.
I tried that argument with the Magats, and even just showing them the numbers doesn't convince them.
If Trump told them 2+2=5 not 4, they would believe him.

(4,002 posts)I agree with your analysis of "real Republicans". They are greedy and could care less. I think a lot of the Republicans are just clueless. They "think" they're Republican but they don't really understand the real Republican agenda.
It reminds me of President Shepards speech at the end of The American President (great movie). He talks about Sen Rumsen and says all he cares about is "Making you afraid of it and telling you who to blame for it". Totally accurate GQP playbook.

(4,002 posts)When their cities were bombed out, their children killed, they kind of figured it out. They passed laws during reconstruction and kind of became aware. Yet now even there the spectre of evil has cropped up. More EU countries are shifting right. Most of it is anti-immigrant based it seems. Other religious groups becoming more prevalent. Kind of what's happening here.

(43,506 posts)Not ragging on Germany--they really tried. But fascist ideas will continue to fester even when you work hard to stop them; the desire to control others is part of human nature.

(4,002 posts)I wonder if those EU countries shifting that way are blocking history from the new generation (like Florida and other GOP states). Hide the evils of the past so they're not aware of them and thus can't be horrified by them.

(38,120 posts)Their core base is at 30% of their registered party members.
That aligns with the exit poll in the 2016 South Carolina primary where 30% thought slavery should be legal.
They are fearful of a Browning America and believe our existence is an existential threat to them.
Their behavior and beliefs put them in peril. As Generation Z comes of age - they are toast.
I'm just hoping they don't engage in 1920's level of terrorism. If they do - things are going to be awful for them in the future.

(416 posts)I'm not calling you out. I couldn't find a citation that supported that 30% of primary voters in South Carolina thought slavery should be legal.
The best I could find was a citation from Time that said, "Nearly 20% of Trump Fans Think Freeing the Slaves Was a Bad Idea." That's a pretty shocking number in itself too.

But that article is short on specifics.

(4,002 posts)It reminds me of the 2000 Alabama Prop 2 Ammendment. It removed the ban on interracial marriage from the state constitution. Loving v Virgina was already the law but the language was still there.
It passed with 59% of the vote, however 25 of 67 counties voted against it. Racism was alive and well in the South.

South Carolina got rid of their language in 1998. Like Alabama there was objection in some parts.

(13,283 posts)when they get over Trump, instead of learning from their experience, they will come up with a different, just as insane conspiracy theory, find a different idol to worship, and do the same thing over and over again expecting different results.
Certain poorly educated people will just refuse to do the critical thinking thingy. Because it's harder than being ignorant.
NowISeetheLight
(4,002 posts)The GQP has mastered the art of blame. They've managed to convince all these poorly educated low earning people that it's (insert racial minority, immigrant, lgbt, etc here)'s fault they're not rich and successful like Trump.
For a party that claims to be so obsessed with self-responsibilty, they sure do tell their followers to NOT look in a mirror.
