Someone we spent time over the weekend, who has New England roots gave us this warning. He said that he was invited to go on a boor hunt and that weapons would be supplied. He was expecting the usual bore rifles and instead there was a huge case of AK47s for everyone to pick through. He couldn't believe the damage those guns did to the hogs and assumed they weren't hunting for food, but to eradicate them.
Once it was all clear to him, he requested that no pictures be taken. He just wanted out.

(10,348 posts)Boars are intact male pigs. Boors are " ill bred" humans.

(484 posts)We shot a bunch at a friends propety near Elmo Tx last November. Cut the backstrap off one and let the others sit there for the coyotes to have a meal. Damn nasty stinky bastards.
I guess if you shoot one young enough it might not be too bad but bigger targets are easier even with a night scope

Wild hog sausage is incredible, it will make the best red beans and rice.
If you can capture the piglets, it will make the best crock pot roast you've ever had in your life.
I trap them here because there is no shortage of them. Free groceries!

(130,537 posts)But seriously, feral hogs (domestic pigs that went wild, some crossed with European wild boars) are extremely destructive and they have become a real problem in TX and some other states, so they probably are trying to eradicate them as well as eat them. I can understand not wanting to be involved in a hunt like that, though.

(1,323 posts)I remember reading an article on it a few years ago on yahoo or something. Even with all the recreational hunting their numbers are increasing, so some sort of eradication measures like using AK47s doesn't actually surprise me.

(2,369 posts)I live in Texas, and theres a lot wrong here. However, eradicating boars with high powered rifles isnt one of those problems. There are tons of the, here, and they are incredibly destructive and dangerous. You need something pretty high powered to take down (especially relatively humanely) a large boar. There are some morons around here who are all about hunting by helicopter and such, but you only see that stupidity on some ranches where guests pay lots of money to shoot at things from the air and hit nothing. Otherwise, you wind up covering lots of sweltering terrain, can get into scary situations with large groups of these things, and frankly, a lot of people think they taste horrible, and when you eradicate a large group you wont have people with the time or inclination to field dress a whole bunch in up to 120 degrees (heat index), then haul out sometimes literal tons of carcasses for proper butchering. Dont weep for the hogs.

(2,256 posts)The feral hog issue aside, Texas is not lost. As a native Texan, lifelong resident and dedicated Democrat I can assure you that there are thousands of us Democrats who are working hard to turn our state blue again and reverse the damage inflicted upon us by the current magat regime. So instead of writing us off, please send us your positive vibes and best wishes. Regards.

(12,002 posts)An AK47 is typically chambered in 7.62 x 39 mm. Thats an intermediate powered round, basically being a shorter and lower powered version of the Russian 7.62 x 54R mm round fired by the Russian main battle rifle of WWII, the MosinNagant.

(22,695 posts)Can vaporize 3/4 of a hog and cause a hunter to immediately change his life. I can only imagine what the larger Russian round does.
OTH, the 7.62x39 is noticeably less powerful than the .308 and .30-06 commonly used for boar hunting, so I can't understand why a person who hunts would be surprised by the wounds.

(20,356 posts)A 7.62x39 round from an AK isn't even putting out as many foot-pounds as a 120 yr old Winchester .30-30 lever action. A basic bolt action .308 or .30-06 hunting rifle does far more damage to game. The 20-gauge shotgun my 12 yr old daughter carried last fall with me for whitetail deer does more damage as well.
Personally, I wouldn't use an AR or AK for boar, simply because they're too weak. Well, maybe an AR-10, but that's in .308 Winchester.

(4,848 posts)They grow like weeds and multiply like rabbits. Ive no problem with using a high powered rifle with these varmints.

(40,915 posts)That's not hunting, that's killing.
If the purpose is killing, call it that.
For the hogs, that sounds legitimate.
