I know who Avon is, but what is the makeup of this Foundation?

Saw a bunch of pink ribbon branded stuff at a store today and it looked all the world like a Komen display - and they were absolutely Stalinistic about brand control.

and that sets my BS meter off, especially for a charitable organization.

If someone wants to investigate these people. here's the link http://www.avonfoundation.org/foundation/breast-cancer-advisory-board/

I suspect we will find that they are the same Reich-wingnuts with a new logo.

This smells sneaky to me. If it was a joint venture, they should have done a media blitz about it to own it. If this is Komen, they are going to be playing defense on how they handled this, IMO.

they were founded in 1955.

It looks like the foundation has been around for a while. The breast cancer awareness program began in 1992. I forgot the date of the domestic violence program start.

This looks like the old Avon we all know and love to mock. My mom and her "Avon Lady" were good friends for a long time. They became widows during the same year, I think.

I'm not sure komen trademarked the pink ribbon or they may sell licensing.

Could be a tie-in but can't tell just by the ribbon or the names, yet.

edited to add: wiki says pink ribbon is public domain 2nd edit: except in Canada where it is "trademark"ed by the gov't. See the article linked in wiki footnote #18. http://www.alive.com/articles/view/17265/borage_for_breasts

For those who now don't care for the pink ribbon because of komen, the above article suggests using the blue borage flower instead.

Additional information at Avon Foundation site says they've put together the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Forum and Global Breast Cancer Congress. I would assume komen is a participant in mutual activities.

as far as I know it has always been a separate, though complementary effort to the Komen campaign. I went on one of the Avon walks several years back.

Please, DUers... Don't use a broad stroke to paint Avon with the same (very deserved) negative stroke that Komen receives.

I don't know how good the Avon Foundation is.

Having said that, I thought Komen trademarked the Pink Ribbon?

for the relay one year because we didn't buy through them. They were locally made with our business sponsor's logo on the back and a pink ribbon on the front. Made everyone change because it was 'trademark infringement'.

This wasn't a promotion I saw - it was a display in a store with pins, pocketbooks, travel mugs, etc, etc.. All branded "Avon".

I think it was "for the cure" that Komen laid claim to. Although they might have tried it with the pink ribbon as well. Avon does hold separate events around here and probably everywhere for that matter. I think they're separate organizations, but that doesn't mean they don't intermingle on some level.
