Let's look at the success of Republican investigations:
Benghazi - failure, found no criminality
Hillary's emails - failure
Durham report - failure
Hunter's laptop/Ukraine - failure
Biden's alleged corruption - failure
It's almost like Republicans are lying criminals who drum up fake investigations to cover up their own crimes.

(4,002 posts)It's big news on Faux. They're spinning it into China and laptop garbage (as we knew they would). More spin to keep the $5m (or was it $10m, they keep changing) money innuendo going.
So the real story is no laptop stuff. No money laundering. No suspicious funds. He didn't pay taxes two years. DOJ had all the "evidence" those idiots in the House were saying showed all this "possible criminal activity"... yet nothing? Wow. Imagine that. GQP Liars.
Biden has been under federal investigation since 2018. That investigation into his "tax affairs" began amid the discovery of suspicious activity reports (SARs) regarding funds from "China and other foreign nations."
Fox News first reported in 2020 that the FBI had subpoenaed a laptop and hard drive purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden in connection with a money-laundering investigation in late 2019.

(15,675 posts)But was this case related to the whole Ukraine/laptop thing? I thought it was a completely different case/issue.

(5,831 posts)The big deal over the laptop was because it reportedly had email correspondence with his overseas clients and his business partners that rightwingers tried to conflate into false claims of serious nefarious wrongdoing, when he was receiving fees as a lawyer and consultant for some clients interested in American investment opportunities and he was paid to sit on the board of Ukraine company Burisma, none of which was illegal.
How does that work into not paying taxes? Were they trying a Capone route with him?
I'm not saying that the laptop junk has any merit, but I don't want to overstate what this case means.

(2,217 posts)the "bribery/laptop" investigation, they looked into all underlying income for Hunter. They found no wrongdoing EXCEPT for the tax issues, which he's already paid back in full (again, as I understand it).

(11,767 posts)To make their worldview work. Like literally, they require "enemies" who are caricatures. Reality does not generally comport to the ideas of Conservatives. They see themselves as victims, and they actually are, but of their own leadership, who wants to use them for votes and activism, but generally create policies that hurt all except the wealthy.
So, the right wing leaders give them these "boogeymen" to rail against. "The Clinton Crime Family", "The Biden Crime Family", "Michelle Obama and her well toned arms and gardening" actual people who want to use the power of government to expand opportunities for people like them and us. It is easier for them to believe in some nefarious plot, than to simply understand that Conservatism is about hierarchy and only those at the top actually benefit while the rest of us have to struggle to make ends meet.
They literally need to delude themselves into thinking that the wealthy give a damn about them.

(602 posts)This settlement of the tax case (not yet a settlement of the firearms case) is not unusual with IRS cases. Altho the case originally sounds as a criminal case, the IRS is really interested in collecting the money and it knows that it won't get much if the defendant is locked up, so a settlement involving payment (possibly of a negotiated amount) is sufficient and the criminal aspect of the case vanishes.
This sort of thing is fairly common and doesn't indicate something special just for a President's son.

(9,477 posts)So this is more the penalty for deliberately paying late. But the IRS ultimately got the money they were owed so they have no dog in this fight.
The court is going to see that and just be done with it. All of it predicted

(35,088 posts)like Hunter did a lot wrong but the stuff he cited seemed like nothing burgers. The alleged crimes centered around him working jobs he was unqualified for. A lot of people are criminals then. lol. But seriously, it's not like he's a bum off the street. Isn't he an ivy league school educated attorney? Yes, he probably also benefitted from his ability to claim Biden as his dad, but again, join the club. A lot of rich folks would have to resign if nepotism / "who you know" employment relationships were illegal. Let's not even get started on the Jared / Ivanka hypocrisy. It's funny how they're trying to be as quiet as possible during all of this. lol.
