https://www.propublica.org/article/samuel-alito-luxury-fishing-trip-paul-singer-scotus-supreme-courtIn early July 2008, Samuel Alito stood on a riverbank in a remote corner of Alaska. The Supreme Court justice was on vacation at a luxury fishing lodge that charged more than $1,000 a day, and after catching a king salmon nearly the size of his leg, Alito posed for a picture. To his left, a man stood beaming: Paul Singer, a hedge fund billionaire who has repeatedly asked the Supreme Court to rule in his favor in high-stakes business disputes.
Singer was more than a fellow angler. He flew Alito to Alaska on a private jet. If the justice chartered the plane himself, the cost could have exceeded $100,000 one way.
In the years that followed, Singers hedge fund came before the court at least 10 times in cases where his role was often covered by the legal press and mainstream media. In 2014, the court agreed to resolve a key issue in a decade-long battle between Singers hedge fund and the nation of Argentina. Alito did not recuse himself from the case and voted with the 7-1 majority in Singers favor. The hedge fund was ultimately paid $2.4 billion.
Alito did not report the 2008 fishing trip on his annual financial disclosures. By failing to disclose the private jet flight Singer provided, Alito appears to have violated a federal law that requires justices to disclose most gifts, according to ethics law experts.
Experts said they could not identify an instance of a justice ruling on a case after receiving an expensive gift paid for by one of the parties.

No one can do anything about it. Its only logical.
This lifetime job thing was supposed to put judges above corruption but is doing exactly the opposite.
They didnt expect that a whole party would embrace criminal corruption as one of their highest held values so impeachment is not possible.

So, any imagined payments or bribes are merely our unfair exaggerated criticisms of simple, well-deserved perks of the lifetime job of an average ultra-conservative Justice of the Extreme Court - just like Clarence or Brett or John or...

(4,002 posts)I like to think there are some idealistic jurists who believe in America. Who would dedicate their lives to our country without the need for personal wealth or recognition. I believe there are such people.
Pay SCOTUS judges $2m a year. Ban ANY gifts by anyone. Ban any ownership of any stocks by immediate family. Find jurists who love the concept of America.

(2,705 posts)All these privileged fucks, I am so sick of people like Thomas and Alito. They take and take and take and then lie about it because they are bought-and-paid-for and because they lack ethics or morality they cannot even see the harm they do. Frankly, I think it is time that the lying, cheating, bought-off MFs be hauled into a real court of law and get dealt with.

(27,547 posts)But neither one of them will resign nor be ashamed of what they did. Those two have no morals when it comes to being honest. And will not feel guilt that they are willing participants in influence peddling schemes. Which shows they were basically bribed for favorable rulings that benefited their billionaire so called friends.
