Rep. George Santos $500K bond was guaranteed by his father and his aunt (NBC News)WASHINGTON The father and aunt of Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., guaranteed his $500,000 bond after he was charged last month with more than a dozen federal counts, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News on Thursday.
The congressman's father, Gercino Dos Santos, and his aunt, Elma Santos Preven, were the suretors for the bond. They did not have to provide any money upfront they are only obligated to pay if Santos violates the terms of his release.

(33,424 posts)No one gave them any money. They did not need to put up cash.

(43,165 posts)they are not people of means (his family), although George bilked his aunt out of some dough. That's why this phrase is important:
They did not have to provide any money upfront they are only obligated to pay if Santos violates the terms of his release.

(33,424 posts)They pledge their homes which can easily be more than 500k together.

(38,634 posts)Not require that the guarantors actually have the means to pay if George Santos jumps? If so, who gave the money to daddy and auntie?

(27,461 posts)That said, a close relative guaranteeing the individual hardly seems worth all the effort to conceal.
There has to be more to the story.

(4,002 posts)I hope they have a tent to live in after George pulls his next "magic trick" and disappears or something. Those houses will be gone.

(4,002 posts)My guess is you are correct. Why all the gymnastics to hide the fact your Dad put his house up? There has to be more.

(8,387 posts)"Unsecured" means unsecured.
If they pledged their house, then it would not be "unsecured".

(27,461 posts)This article doesnt say unsecured - though other reports do.

(43,165 posts)it varies from state to state, but you only have to put down a percentage of the bail. I see all kinds of figures in my volunteer work: $7500 the other day.
But if the person flees, then they go after your $$. They will even take title to your house if they have to.

(17,802 posts)Charge a 10% fee for covering the full amount. The bondsman puts up the full amount. If you skip out, they hunt you down.
If you have the means, you post the full bail amount. If you don't, it will cost you 10% that you won't get back.
Just another way to screw the poor.
Unsecured Bond works differently. They only come after the money if the defendent doesn't show up.

He just looks stupid after all the big secrecy.. this isn't going to help him with the charges.
