Im struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result. For us, a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same exact site ... I think its just astonishing. Its really quite surreal.

(91,449 posts)He was ready and willing to break the rules for the sake of success, and he was pretty cocky about it. He said so with bravado. Unfortunately for his four fellow casualties, it looks like the rules finally broke him.
Just reminded me of Leona Helmsley and her arrogant statement that "only the little people pay taxes." Well, she was certainly taught a lesson!

(14,578 posts)The boss of the firm that created the missing Titanic submarine gave an interview last year in which he said at some point, safety is just pure waste.
As the search efforts for the missing submersible, Titan, become increasingly desperate, the 2022 interview with boss Stockton Rush re-emerged.
He was discussing the design and mechanics of the crafty on the Unsung Science podcast on CBS.
He told journalist David Pogue: At some point, safety is just pure waste. I mean, if you just want to be safe, don't get out of bed, don't get in your car, don't do anything. At some point, you're going to take some risk, and it really is a risk-reward question."

(1,796 posts)He said that his team's mood changed quickly as it got closer to the wreckage site.
'We realized we were dancing on someone's grave, and we were embarrassed,' Ballard said.
'The mood, it was like someone took a wall switch and went click.
'And we became sober, calm, respectful, and we made a promise to never take anything from that ship, and to treat it with great respect.
'You don't go to Gettysburg with a shovel. You don't take belt buckles off the Arizona.'

(6,619 posts)is why people would think a trip in that submersible would be fun or exciting? First of all it's freezing and second, judging from the pictures of the vehicle, it only had one small portal window? What the hell can you see out that? The pictures on the internet are better. I guess it's so you can say you went down there? I don't get it.

I don't know if these people had that kind of training.
Clearly they did not know what to expect down there.
