The Supreme Court Could Flip the House to Democrats

In another surprising defense of the Voting Rights Act, the Supreme Court lifted its hold on a lower-court ruling ordering a new congressional map in Louisiana.

This follows the court’s ruling in an Alabama case earlier this month, when the justices paved the way for another majority-Black district to be added in that state.

Both states were allowed to use maps in the 2022 midterms that have now been deemed likely unlawful.

Democrats have long accused Republicans of exploiting state legislature majorities to draw electoral maps that dilute the clout of Black voters.

As a result, it’s highly-likely these two rulings will allow Democrats to pick up a pair of additional seats in the House of Representatives.

These rulings could also force redrawing of districts in Georgia, Texas, Florida and other states where redistricting has limited the power of minority voters.

With Republicans holding a five-seat majority heading into the 2024 election cycle, the Supreme Court has put the House of the edge of flipping back to Democratic control.

4. No, I think these rulings were for "rehabilitation" - only 2 GOP seats at risk.

It's a calculated risk. They're (The Federalist Society and fellow Travellers) hoping that inflation and Media propaganda will keep them at least at the 12 seat majority they have now. Who would care if 2 seats in safe deep red states might flip. To them, it's like reversing a turn on a stuck screw about a half twist to reset it so it goes in easier.
They're also planning on a strong Senate flip in 2024, maybe not Veto-proof, but certainly a more Democratic and Ethical Judiciary proofing.

What "12 seat majority" ?? Currently, the Republicans have a 222 - 212 advantage (there is one empty D seat, in Rhode Island). Even though they have 10 more members, technically they have a 5-seat majority, since any flip would lower the margin by 2.

There will be a special election in Rhode Island later this year, and that seat should go to Dems, at which point that will make it 222 - 213. Dems would need to pick up 5 seats in order to take the majority. These Supreme Court decisions will give Dems two of the seats they need.

For example, Louisiana Republicans drew a giant majority-Black district stretching from New Orleans to Baton Rouge.

They can tell the MAGAs and Christian right that it was the voters, not us.

With all the publicity about the corruption of Thomas and Alito, plus a very unpopular Dobbs decision, this Court may be feeling heat. Congress will most likely pass some ethics rules and also try to get term limits as well. Maybe the Court is trying for better behavior for a bit.

Voting maps may become moot depending on how the court rules in that matter. It could be their July 4th gift to America.
