MSNBC Legal Analyst Dismisses 'Awfully Flimsy' Hunter Biden Text

At issue is a July 30, 2017 message released by the House Ways and Means Committee that was purportedly sent by Hunter Biden to a Henry Zhao that reads:

I am sitting here with my father, and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight. And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge, that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.

On Friday’s edition of MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports, Mitchell pointed out that President Joe Biden was not in office during this time period, and McQuade dismissed the message as “puffery” from Hunter:

BARBARA MCQUADE: Yes, I heard that statement. And I find it to be awfully flimsy on which to build any sort of an investigation. It just simply is some sort of puffery from Hunter Biden.

Hunter Biden attorney Christopher Clark released the following statement about the message:

Biased and politically-motivated, selective leaks have plagued this matter for years. They are not only irresponsible, they are illegal. A close examination of the document released publicly yesterday by a very biased individual raises serious questions over whether it is what he claims it to be. It is dangerously misleading to make any conclusions or inferences based on this document.

theme Mitchell wants to push.

Mediaite: Mr. Shapley, in fact, also told Congress that his investigation had uncovered some evidence that some of the claims of the elder Mr. Biden’s involvement were mere “wishful thinking.”

He told of an interview conducted with Hunter Biden’s business associate Rob Walker, who told investigators that it was “projection” that former Vice President Biden would get involved in their business ventures.

“I certainly never was thinking at any time the V.P. was a part of anything we were doing,” Mr. Walker said, according to Mr. Shapley.

Hunter Biden at the time was addicted to crack cocaine, engaging in tawdry and self-destructive behavior, and facing financial pressures.

One thing I believe as well as I can, his father had nothing to do with this, or anything remotely similar to it. That's one advantage of a half century's scrutinized record in politics. Later, when Obama sent him to Ukraine to represent the U.S. in removing deep-seated Russia-supported corruption from Ukraine's government, he brought a long earned and well known reputation for good character to the task.
