MI: House passes bills guaranteeing Affordable Care Act protections in Michigan
The Michigan House of Representatives passed a package of bills on Tuesday that would cement key components of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in Michigan law.
House Bills 46194623 include regulations on insurance providers including prohibiting denying coverage based on preexisting conditions, gender identity or sexual orientation, requiring insurers to allow dependents to stay on a parents health care plan until age 26 and the elimination of annual or lifetime limits on benefits.
Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming), who sponsored HB 4621, said that extending the protections of the ACA to state law will be a relief to Michiganders.
I heard from folks in my district who are concerned about health care, and I know Im not alone, Fitzgerald said. Im hearing that people all across the state are positively impacted by the ACA each and every day.
After the ACA was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010, the federal government reported that nearly 20 million people gained health care coverage as a direct result of the legislation. Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth), sponsor of HB 4623, said that the ACAs accessibility and affordability allows people to obtain preventive, rather than reactionary care.
