The NationArchived: https://archive.ph/qv6uS
Like last years revocation of reproductive rights in Dobbs v. Jackson, the decision today, in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard University and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina, achieves a long-standing conservative policy goal through the fiat of six unelected Supreme Court justices. Conservatives have been gunning for affirmative action since the policy was reintroduced in the 1960s (it had previously been used during Reconstruction and conservatives killed it then too). Today is a victory for the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society, and the entire conservative legal establishment that has correctly identified the courts as the way to reverse policies they dont like.
But the death of affirmative action was not achieved merely through the machinations of Republican lawyers. While conservatives on the Supreme Court delivered the fatal blow, the policy has long been made vulnerable by the soft bigotry of parents, whose commitment to integration and equality turns cold the moment their little cherubs fail to get into their first choice of college or university. If you want to see a white liberal drop the pretense that they care about systemic racism and injustice, just tell them that their privately tutored kid didnt get into whatever elite school they were hoping for. If you want to make an immigrant family adopt a Klansmans view of the intelligence, culture, and work ethic of Black folks, tell them that their kids standardized test scores are not enough to guarantee entry into ivy-draped halls of power. Some of the most horribly racist claptrap folks have felt comfortable saying to my face has been said in the context of people telling me why they dont like affirmative action, or why my credentials are somehow unearned because they were given to me by affirmative action.
That last bit is in some ways the most devastating: Black people are attacked and shamed simply because the policy exists, regardless of whether it benefited them or not. Ive had white folks whom I could standardize test into a goddamn coma tell me that I only got into school because of affirmative action. I once talked to a white guywhose parents name was on one of the buildings on campuswho asked me how it felt to know I got extra help to get in. The sheer nerve of white folks is sometimes jaw-dropping.

(130,529 posts)The college admissions scandal was a prime example (though at least some of them were prosecuted). But paying to have someone cheat on entrance exams is just one way to beat out the poorer mediocre white people. Donate a building and your semi-literate stoner kid is a shoo-in, and he'll even graduate.

(11,767 posts)People I went to school with, whose parents I had met, talked about "affirmative action" in a negative way when their kid didn't get into the schools we had applied to together that I got into.
Liberals "generally understand" but most of us have grown up hearing all the bullshit that Conservatives spout because their voices are amplified relative to their actual numbers in society. Most liberal policies enjoy over 60% support, however, when you bring in the culture of grievance, you peel people away. Reagan peeled a lot of so called liberals away by going after "welfare queens" and "young bucks eating steak and lobster" Racism and sexism affect everyone unless they actively fight it at all times.

Being from North Carolina helps you with UNC. it is limited by law that over 80% of its enrolling classes must be from within NC.

(11,767 posts)but he got into Yale. His granddaddy Prescott's name is on a building.
Trump got into U Penn because his brother knew the admissions counselor.
Lots of mediocre people get into school because of connections not because they earned their way in.
When disadvantaged people of color or poor white people get help to equalize the playing field, it is wrong, but everyone seems to think that rich people deserve and earn everything they get.

(24,207 posts)The rich send their kids to elite private high schools that guarantee their kids a great GPA and the inside track to be accepted at elite colleges. Then when they get to school they're in frats that help them pass classes and get the great internships.
Zip Code is the #1 predictor of college acceptance.

(10,333 posts)I think Mystal finally came around to supporting Hillary in 2016, but did so with such snark and scathing criticism that it was hard to tell. As late as September 2016, he was peddling that bullshit about how we had a one-party system in America. He said the party of Clintons was the same party of Bushes and likened the party of Obama to the party of Romney.
And while I'm on the topic, Eddie Glaude -- he who boasted he left the presidential ballot blank in 2016-- was on MSNBC criticizing this decision and I just had to roll my eyes.
If you can't tell the difference between a Democrat and a Republican, spoiler alert: all the Republican-nominated Justices voted to ban affirmative action while all the Democratic-appointed Justices dissented.
Another spoiler alert: this won't be the last time that this Republican-hijacked Supreme Court will beat you over the head with the clear difference between Republicans and Democrats, but the question is, will people like Glaude learn?

(12,554 posts)They're going to actually see their acceptance numbers go down, as Asian-Americans take their place.
And if they remove race as a consideration, they'll have to remove gender as well.
Which means white males (who as a group underperform women applicants) will also see their numbers go down.

(1,495 posts)It's hard to get into the Ivy League colleges or Top law schools if you are white and your parents don't have money. Plus he was fully homeschooled. His first day of in person school was his first day at his Ivy League undergraduate college.
My nephew was accepted at every top 10 law school except Yale, where he was waitlisted. He really wanted Harvard though because of the vibrant community. I think this kid is going to be president someday.
He is very liberal and very much for affirmative action. He's very upset with this decision.
