Regardless of his current lead in the Magapublican race for 2024...

It looks very much like DjT's political career will be in total shambles by Spring 2024.
Jack Smith is leaving no stone unturned...and even if DjT doesn't get put in prison, I strongly believe he will be banned from taking any office in this country ever again at that point.

What is the mechanism for doing that?

They had two opportunities with the impeachments, but Republicans chose to keep him around.

Fourteenth Amendment, Section 3:

"No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability

Specifically of insurrection for the 14th to come into play? Who would make this declaration? Would Congress have to act?

Hope you are right!

Under the 14th Amendment, disqualification requires only a simple majority vote, not the two-thirds vote needed to convict during an impeachment trial.

The political process – the voters alone have the authority to keep Trump from holding office again.

Otherwise, yes – there is no mechanism that can ‘ban’ Trump.

…is considered an anachronism – a relic of the post-Civil War era intended to keep former ‘confederate’ solders from holding office, as they did in 1867 after the 1866 midterms.
