Kayla Kenney, a 15-year-old girl from Kentucky, was recently expelled from her private Christian high school because she dared to wear a rainbow shirt and pose in front of a rainbow-decorated cake for her birthday. According to Kayla's mom, Kimberly, the school claimed Kayla's actions were a "lifestyle violation."
Kayla was a freshman at Whitefield Academy in Louisville, Kentucky when she turned 15, reports WAVE News. For her birthday, she went out to dinner with her family. Her mom snapped a photo of her with her cake and posted it to social media.
--------------
But the post was shared with Whitefield Academy and, just a few days later, they were informed Kayla had been expelled. The Head of School, Dr. Bruce Jacobson, emailed Kimberly letting her know Kayla was expelled immediately "due to a post on social media." Kimberly told WAVE, "I feel judged, she feels judged, just very devastating to us."
In the email, Dr. Jacobson wrote that Kayla's picture "demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy's belief." God forbid high schoolers learn "cultural acceptance," right?
The school claims that's not the whole story, though. They say the photo is just "the latest in two years' worth of 'lifestyle violations.'" In a statement made to NBC News, Whitefield Academy said, "Inaccurate media reports are circling stating that the student in question was expelled from our school solely for a social media post. In the fall, we met with the student to give her a final chance to begin to adhere to our code of conduct. Unfortunately, she did not live up to the agreement, and therefore, has been expelled."

(13,468 posts)I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
Apparently God sees rainbows as a good thing. Christofascists take every beautiful thing and make it ugly. I don't care what this girl did before, I guess the rainbow themed birthday was the last straw for them.

(7,232 posts)knows why people choose private schools. In the 1950s, my parents sent me to parochial school because I could get a better education there and it was true. A friend of hers was a public school math teacher and when I was in 8th grade, my parents made me go to the public school and meet the teacher to give me a test they gave to their honors 8th grade students. The teacher was shocked that I beat every one of her students on the test. And this was in the days of all-white public schools that got lots of money in suburbs of NYC.

My heart goes out to her.

I do set my (rain) bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
Exodus 26:1
Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet:
*close enough
Ezekiel 1:28
As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
Revelation 4:1-3
After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.
And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

(23,802 posts)"Kimberly told NBC News that she decided to go public with this story because she wanted to stand up for her kid. "Just treat people with kindness and love," she said, "and don't be judgmental."
If that's how she feels why the hell did she have her enrolled in a Kentucky Christian school?????????? Kid is better off now if you ask me!

(3,396 posts)I dont.
But why are you judging the mom instead of the people pushing this bullshit. Even if this kid went to a different school the bullshit that the school is pulling would still be occurring.

(7,189 posts)The lawsuit was settled in 2022, and the settlement remains undisclosed, except that the student's mother referred to it as a "joke."
It would be impossible to get the whole story, since the school would not be able to disclose any specific violations of their code of conduct, or any of the actions they took involving the student.
In our state, parents are warned that enrollment in a private school constitutes a legally binding contract. If the students and parents are given a handbook with policies and rules, the parents are, by enrolling their children, agreeing to those specific terms and conditions. If the school says that social media posts can subject the student to disciplinary action, based on the school administrator's determination, then that's what happens.
Know what you're getting into. Many Christian schools are great, nurturing environments for students, helping them navigate socially in a real world and giving them an academically excellent education. But not all of them are wired that way. Read everything before signing anything and ask and you'll be able to tell whether your child will be a good fit.

They lied in their opening paragraph and said it was recent. Easy to miss the 3 and a half year gap.
