Players have been required to wear white at the event since 1877, and the dress code rules are extremely strict.
Off-white and cream are not allowed, and "a single trim of colour" no more than a centimetre is permitted on the neckline or sleeve cuff.
But from now on, women will be able to make a subtle departure from the Wimbledon whites.
In a change announced late last year, female players now have the option of wearing dark-coloured undershorts, provided they are no longer than their shorts or skirt.

(114,201 posts)While I know the old dress code for the players is quaint, old-fashioned, and probably beyond "timed-out," I sort of like it. Wimbledon is entrenched in a very old tradition, after all. Is wearing white really such a big deal? This minor change seems a reasonable (and imminently practical) compromise...

(39,675 posts)Though I do admit that I think there's something special about Wimbledon traditions. It's not just the court surface that makes Wimbledon special among the Grand Slam tournaments.
I also enjoy when something out-of-character happens. I don't remember what year it was, but during a weather delay the crowd started "the wave." The TV commentators were enjoying how that was so not typical of a Wimbledon audience--but were loving every minute of it.
Oh, well. Until CBS starts broadcasting the matches again, I have no way to watch. It's too bad really. I am quite unfamiliar w/ the latest talent.
It was a big deal back in the 70s and 80s to change the image of tennis from a "rich person's" sport, and make it more inclusive.
Now it costs money to just watch the game.

Im a bit surprised at some of the answers here.

Your reason is probably why white bikinis are often not a good choice too.
