Erma Bombeck on America's 4th of July

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness."

I loved good writing even at an early age (I was into Woodhouse around age 10), and devoured it.

Some of the stuff she talked about was alien (e.g. "plats" of real estate), but enough was universal, and often hilarious, that it drew me in, and taught me a little about America.
