(60,186 posts)Look at a map of the states in 1787. The smaller states were scared of being tyrannized by big states, which in those days included a comparatively huge Massachusetts and Virginia. The smaller states demanded a super-proportional amount of say-such as the Senate and the Electoral College, or they would not join the United States.
Never ever envisioning two dozen huge, sparsely populated states like Wyoming or North Dakota, voting en bloc for right wing ignorants and religious terrorists, the bigger colonies went along with the demands of the smaller states-to-be.

The sparsely populated states with few EC votes alone don't even come close to what he needs

(13,480 posts)All have become redder and/or have passed voter repression laws. Texas gave the legislature the power to take over Harris County (Houston) voting, which is heavily Democratic. They didnt do that to ensure a fair election!
I see Biden winning most of the states he won in 2020 and possibly all of them. The three states I would be concerned about are Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Georgias Secretary of State has refused to take recommended improvements to the security of voting systems, even after the evidence of an election worker sharing election machine programming with MAGATs. Plus a Republican governor is likely to look the other way with the legislature declaring fraud that does not exists in counties like Fulton.
Pennsylvania was close last time, but I hope some new jobs from infrastructure and climate investments have gone there.
Wisconsin is the third state of concern because Republicans there are absolutely rabid about electing Trump. Wisconsin is one of the states where Republicans submitted a fake set of electors for the Electoral College. Im sure they have new dirty tricks or illegal voting actions planned to overturn voters choices in 2024. Im not sure the governor has any power to stop them since he could not in 2020.
I hope future indictments and convictions will make Trump less appealing to voters, but I dont trust Republicans in any of those states not to cheat.

A gift to any listening entrepreneurs: websites exposing billionaires in every way imaginable. Theyve been hoovering-up data on us - quite obtrusively, I might add. Perhaps their daily minutiae should be scrutinized just as closely.

(7,794 posts)It is, more accurately, an electoral contest, a fact of which we have been cruelly reminded twice already in this century.
This would confuse people to distraction and rightly so. We're a nation of people who remain pretty much out of touch with any concept of their government's machinations or potentials. How else could we have been sold on Trump's inevitability as a 2024 presidential candidate. We'll, quite possibly, be justly rewarded for our willful ignorance.
He needs to be imprisoned and everyone knows why. They've known for years already but the "be patient/be lawful/all in good time" crowd has leashed the anger by appealing to our subservient nature. So, we'll probably see the piece of shit's name on the ballot again.

(4,616 posts)If the citizenry in this country actually had a clue, or even the slightest interest in, how the US general election AND their own government works. Instead of depending on the talking heads to TELL them everything. Now there's a novel concept! Continuing to treat the citizenry like daft 3 year old's so they may remain blameless for EVERYTHING ill in life hasn't worked so far. What makes you think it will suddenly start working now?

(4,741 posts)General election != presidential election.
It's the elections held in November, and the term "general" is used to distinguish it from the earlier primary elections, because the "general" election isn't divided by parties choosing candidates to represent them.
General elections happen in presidential-voting years, and in non-Presidential voting years, where congressional reps and/or state offices are often voted on, either "mid-term" elections or, as in Virginia, elections held in states during odd-number years.

(7,794 posts)The rest if the candidates, reps and sens, win by popular vote.
They have their elections on the same date. That is the only similarity. Aside from that their contest is settled by a different metric altogether.

(4,741 posts)Because they can't. Federal trial guidelines require trials to be held 70 days after indictment, or after all delay attempts have been exhausted.
And TFG is fast running out of road for delays. He used up a whole bunch of them with challenges to the search warrants and executive privilege claims, even *before* the indictment. That will hurt him, and much faster than you think.

(4,741 posts)Were you absent from American history class when the 1920 election was under discussion? Because someone in prison ran for the highest office that year.
His name was Eugene Debs, and it was established *back then* that he could run despite being a convicted criminal, because the Constitution had zero provision to prevent it.
You're over a century late in wondering why convicted criminals can run for office, but not vote.

(1,182 posts)Why should he get a return engagement.
He did such a miserable job the first time.
How many Americans could have been saved he took a more proactive stance against COVID.
For myself, I do not forget he tried to repeal ACA.
2 years after this attempted repeal, my lymphoma returned (diagnosed 35 years ago)
It took 4 or 5 treatments before we found one that worked.
Back in August 2022, I achieved complete remission.
I will never vote for him.

(4,741 posts)It's about how the votes go. Nothing about it has ever been about "deserving."
You're making a classic mistake of confusing "ought" and "is." Ought is about feelings and wishful thinking. Is = reality. The reality of the US political system is that awful people can become elected officials, if enough people vote for them, and all the "ought" or "ought not" has bugger all to do with it.

(5,484 posts)Have to kill them like zombies. If the democrats run on Trump, and Trump runs on issues (making stuff up as usual, but about issues), he might win. If democrats stick to a moderate version of eat the rich, we win every time.
jaxexpat
(7,794 posts)Depends, really, on how moderate an "eat the rich" campaign is presented. Some demographics would approve full on "shoot and field-dress on sight" programs while others would respond best to the current pablum of "moderate placation of demands from the wealthy". Such picky eaters are our fellow countrymen. It always amazes me what they regurgitate at the polls every other November. Even with ingredients and label warnings clearly written on the package, sugary treats win hands down.

(38,726 posts)Trump has been advertising about himself for years and years. Much of that is truly "NEGATIVE."
THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE TO NOT SEE THIS ASPECT OF DONALD TRUMP.
FOR EXAMPLE: TRUMP DID SAY IN REFERENCE TO THE PANDEMIC....EARLY ON...."IT'S ALL A HOAX."
I THINK TRUMP WAS PRESIDENT AT THE TIME. OUR ADS WITH TRUMP SAYING THAT WILL BE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE.
TRUMP HASN'T A CLUE ON HOW BAD HE HAS DAMAGED HIMSELF, BUT WE HAVE MORE THAN A CLUE. ...
CAN YOU IMAGINE THIS: "OVER AND OVER AS AN ELECTION GETS CLOSER", OUR SIDE PRESENTS THOSE ADS
AS PART OF A CAMPAIGN TO DEFEAT TRUMP. ....DONALD TRUMP SAING, " IT'S ALL A HOAX"..
TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TIMES AROUND THE COUNTRY WILL DESTROY DONALD TRUMP FOR GOOD.

It's all bullshit ... ALL of it is BULLSHIT. There is no chance that Chump can ever be elected Potus again.
We have a wonderful, talented incumbent President in Joe Biden and he will win re-election next year. We must believe this and act accordingly. It upsets me to read a lot of this Chump stuff on DU and everywhere else, but I've trained myself to tune it out. At least I hope I have. Joe Biden will be our President for another 4 years and Chump will hopefully be a convicted felon.
The only thing I don't know is, whether or not he'll be sent to prison. Once he's convicted of federal crimes, it's possible that he might get a sentence of "house arrest" or something like that. (We can't control that.) We just need to make sure that Joe Biden is our President for the next term in office.
