The St. Pete Times, a liberal newspaper, printed a St. Paul man's letter to the editor today. He has known Florida for all of his 63 years. He has had it. Sold his condo and moved back to Minnesota. Will not live in a state that hates LBGTQ people, bans books, demonizes science, and is doing nothing about ridiculous property insurance rates. Doesn't like that the politicians are modeling themselves after autocrats. He asked that the good people of Florida not get sucked into the miasma.
This is on top of a meeting I saw on tonite's news given by farmers in the Miami area. He was begging the migrants to please stay as there will be no one to pick the crops. It took less than 6 years for duh-fascist to turn Florida into the shithole it has become. I am sick.

No longer, my wife and I are making plans to leave.
Another reason is it's just to damn hot now. I'm a summer kind of guy, but this is getting out of hand. Looking at the forecast, it's hitting 95 for at least the next two weeks. And it's been that hot for the last two. Throw in the humidity and it's not sustainable. This will kill you.
Ocelot II
(129,838 posts)because of the weather - it's so unbearably hot and humid. I recall visiting relatives there some years ago in the summer, and all I could do is sit and sweat and hope to find an air conditioned place indoors and cool off. I very much get that you would love it there, having been born and raised there. It would be Not Very Nice if you hated it but for some reason could not leave.
As someone who has lived in various states: New York, Arizona twice, Minnesota, Virginia, Colorado, Kansas, and now New Mexico, I've been quite puzzled that a lot of people who live in a cold-weather state have an almost knee-jerk response to retirement by moving to a southern or southwestern state. To me, there is a lot more to quality of life than the weather. The politics. The people. Are there cultural things there? Places to visit?
Again, having spent your whole life in Florida is a very, very different life from mine. I was born in northern NYS, and had I never left -- when I was 14 my mom left my abusive, alcoholic father, and moved us five kids to Tucson, AZ -- I might very well still be there and very happy. That move to a very different part of the country, from a small town in rural northern NY to a large, relatively sophisticated city, changed my life completely.
Every time I'm about to post something along the lines of "That is a terrible state! Why would anyone live there???" someone who does live there and loves it makes a post about that. Which reminds me that we live in a wonderful country, with 50 wonderful states. So what if you couldn't pay me to live in some of them? You probably could not be paid enough to live in any of my favorites.

Pretty soon property values could start falling.
I have a friend there and I worry about her. She has a condo, but when she lived here in NJ, she and her husband owned numerous properties in the expensive areas of NJ. They sold them all, and some recently, too, so she has to have a substantial amount from property appreciation. She doesn't talk like it, though, so I don't really know what's going on. Heres why Im leaving
Florida, I have known you all the 63 years of my life. Generations of my family retired here and I leave with many memories, tainted by what Florida has become. I have sold my condo. I want nothing to do with a place where LGBTQ+ people are deliberately put in danger, where books are banned, where science and the media are demonized and derided. These politicians are modeling themselves on autocrats. We urgently need real leaders to face the very real challenges of our time. Our children and grandchildren are being robbed of their future. Climate change is a very real existential threat and political bickering has cost us precious time. Hurricanes, heat waves, fires and droughts will keep coming. The costs of insurance will continue to rise. The real threats are not drag queens, transgender people using the wrong bathroom and books that tell our story. Good people of Florida, dont allow yourselves to be sucked into the miasma.

(42,805 posts)from the same town I live in in NJ went to FL to check out relocating there. I really was upset at the thought they were moving, but their property taxes here reached 17 grand a year and they were looking for some relief (although quite frankly, they own many rentals here and in PA and are in fact well situated to pay 17 grand a year in property taxes).
So anyway, they went down there to look at properties and see if they liked the place and they kept running into gun nuts.
Cut their trip short and came back here and said no way, we're happy to pay $17 grand to not live around gun nuts.
Now we have some property tax relief from our progressive governor, Phil Murphy. Seniors who make less than half a million a year in income get $6500 back a year. Also, there are other programs that might give them even more, like homestead rebate and Anchor.

I grew up in Eastern Kentucky. Everyone had guns and knew how to handle it. Heck, I was once a better shot than my dad. There weren't any gun nuts. They were merely tools to keep safe in the woods and find food. I don't know where THIS bunch of fools came from, but I wish they'd stay the hell out of schools and grocery stores and go back to hell where they belong.

(27,509 posts)I attend the local Democratic Club meetings. There ARE Democrats here. I'm involved in other volunteer activities. Do I love FL, no not really, I tolerate it. As a New England native I miss many of the wonderful seasonal changes that make up New England. Most of my family is in New England and I do think seriously about moving back there. When I came here 25 years ago FL wasn't what it is today. But, the everyday people you meet are generally good people. Actually, the jerks many times are the mid-westerners and New Yorkers who come down here after Christmas and stay through March.
The other issue IS the weather, the fall and winter are delightful, but once the Summer Solstice begins to impact us the heat of the sun is almost unbearable, at least for me. Went to a 4th get together and we all stayed inside instead of enjoying the outdoors because it was so brutality hot; mid to high 90's. Been that way for a couple of weeks. Some relief today, only high 80's.
What do you expect people to do? Florida voted for DeSantis-TWICE. And the second time they did so overwhelmingly- it was't even close. I would NEVER set foot in Florida for any reason. It's too dangerous for us LGBT people. Plus it's just too damn hot!

This is really the time to sell, if people are considering it, because retirees up north are confronting another damned winter and Florida looks pretty good to those folks and maybe people who want to leave can unload the condo or tract house without losing their shirts. The retirees find out about the flying cockroaches, steambath weather, hurricanes, sinkholes, sky high electrical charges, and other nasty surprises later.
I can't blame anyone for leaving, you couldn't give me that state. I especially can't blame any woman under 50 for getting the hell away from there. I do know they're likely going to have enough of extremism and possibly choose more wisely next time. I don't think many things will change quickly.

(26,153 posts)like TX handle future extreme weather events (whose governor mocks prior problems in his state (freezes, heat waves, etc., still doesn't address upgrading the infrastructure)).
I remember MTG stating that 'liberals' who moved to southern GOP-ruled states should not be allowed to vote until some period of time later. Since these southern folks are moving north to escape their situation of adverse weather conditions, perhaps the same sort of rule should apply (a tit for tat rule, since the GOP insists on one).
There also should be some sort of infrastructure fee that these folks should pay, when they move back into these northern communities. In a way, HOAs are doing this in a lot of places anyways, so why not? Northern communities had built out their communities and usually have excellent infrastructure and being that so many of these folks who fled south escaped paying their fair share of the road taxes etc. to pay for the northern improvements (who returned North), it's fair (IMHO).
I do know that every state is different in their taxing schemes, so it's a challenge to compare state by state, but I do think sometimes, that in some states, some states do take advantage of tourists/visitors. A tax known as the tourism tax is a good example. I know it's extreme, but I do get tired of hearing about 'this and that' tax issues, south vs. north. We all live in the same Country, but sometimes you sure can't tell the difference.

(26,153 posts)(a seemingly larger number of tornados than usual) due to climate change. Weather is so complicated, so involved w/ millions of factors, that I think anyone knowing everything about weather and the changes that are occurring are kind of out there.
Some (an increasing number) do/are making sense in what they say, with regard to weather changes. I'll never downplay or downgrade what they say, since it does seem to be more negative weather-related events happening, and it's not just due to our 24x7 electronic media coverage. I also do think that some things, are logical and evident, such as increased moisture (along w/ its associated increase in energy) in the atmosphere, leads to increased tornadic activity, etc.
