lorida Gov. Ron DeSantis presidential campaign is sinking into oblivion and that's filling Floridians with dread, columnist Fred Grimm writes for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Somehow, DeSantis has failed so far to captivate Republican voters despite his relentless exploitation of crafted-for-MAGA issues like race, abortion, immigration, guns, gender dysphoria, gay rights, drag queens, the Disney Company," Grimm wrote.
Grimm notes that despite DeSantis efforts to project a tough guy image of Trump without the baggage, MAGA voters are sticking with what they know.
Poor Ron sold his soul for nothing," he said.
It must seem so unfair to the governor. After all, he could have hardly been any meaner to transgender children or immigrant workers or Black voters. He even signed a flurry of death warrants, knowing how the Republican base loves executions.
But, he said, the almost inevitable return of the governor's focus to Florida is "very bad news for the folks back home."
Grimm asserts that this portends dark times for Florida. If DeSantis behaved so odiously while his career was on the upswing, what can we expect when the governor slouches back to Tallahassee as a sullen reject?
Heaven help us. Hell be governor until Jan. 5, 2027, and theres no chance that an angry, humiliated Ron DeSantis will moderate his venomous ways.

(82,849 posts)As for what an angry, humiliated Ron DeSantis is capable of, he's been pretty fucking bad so far. If the presidency isn't the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, will the legislature continue following DeSantis down the garden path to hell?

But with one of the strictest laws in the nation taking effect July 1 aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration, Florida is being rocked by an exodus of migrant workers. The departures are sparking fear that a labor shortage will leave crops unpicked, tourist hotels short of staff and construction sites idle. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2023/06/21/florida-immigration-law-business-owners-fear-exodus-of-workers-construction-landscaping/70341632007/

pretty hard not to get more than 50% of your base. If he loses it's gonna be hell to pay for Corcoran and the rest, not just the citizens.

(23,802 posts)but he's made zero effort to change his messaging at all. He just waddles around like a wind up toy saying "woke.... woke.... woke......" over and over again. Even MAGAts want to here about real issues SOMETIMES, even if "hearing about" means "being lied to about it".
I think his strategy is he knows drumpf is getting convicted, so if he just lays low maybe he can swoop in a year from now when drumpf heads to prison.

(4,741 posts)Will have TFG leave the race?
Why?
There's absolutely zero in the Constitution to prevent him from continuing to run for office, even if he's behind bars--and that won't stop him or get him off the best grifter gravy train, ever.
And if you think it will change one thing about how his cult would vote, well, you can't have noticed how divorced they are from reality.
It's him or nobody for them.

(2,600 posts)I never understood who picked Ron DeSantis to be the heir apparent to Trump. I dont know what he brings to the table other than his purposefully exaggerated evil persona and his boring woke mantra. It was clear from the beginning that DeSantis has absolutely no charisma. The deplorables need bread and circuses to engage their limited attention. DeSantis can barely fake being human. He might get some traction if he brought a lion on stage to eat a Democratic opponent, but even that would get old quick.
I dont envy Floridians when DeSantis comes back to earth. Hell hath no fury like a scorned Republican politician.

(6,589 posts)remains in even a distant second place through next year, tfg will put him on the short list for VEEP. That would be extremely provocative, which we know tfg relishes; it could add a cash trove that comes with DeSantis, and both men share a dystopian bigotry toward immigrants, minorities, and "woke" liberals.
Despite saying he's not running for vice president, DeSantis likely would accept the second slot. It would set him up to follow after tfg's four years (if he wins), and it sure beats returning to Tallahassee as Governor Loser.
