(26,257 posts)the words of God, and interpret them as they see fit.
The warning of 'beware of false prophets' was made for very good reasons, as we all see today, w/ so many claiming to know the word of God and what God wanted.

(10,252 posts)the laws of physics, biology, science etc. They start indoctrinating children to accept on faith alone what the church authority figures say.
The whole premise of this discussion is absolutely ridiculous -- that there is some powerful wizard in the ether who pulls strings on Earth.

(17,376 posts)her FB page were all basically positive affirmations and non-controversial so I wondered if this quote was out of character for her. Her website seemed pretty much the same. But Wikipedia had high praise for her general views as a Christian about religion(s) as a whole.
. The quotes in the link you posted reminded me very much of my own Mom. Ill have to take a look at her books. Thanks again!

(7,987 posts)I like this one a lot:
"As a general rule, I would say that human beings never behave more badly toward one another than when they believe they are protecting God.

And therein lies the (or one of the) fundamental problem.
Please stop taking it upon yourself, to tell me (us) what 'God wants.'

(12,667 posts)No one has ever proven God talked to them and told them his "will".
We all know it's all just voices in their head that no one else is privy to.
People like to use these voices as bludgeons to force other to do their own will. When they prove to me it's a god then maybe I'll listen to their rantings.

(5,960 posts)I think I will take a pass on my xtian neighbors needing me to conform. I will however keep my powder dry and my, well, you get my point.
That long distance stare whenever a maga-zombie speaks of their god and some revelation they had about 'topic of the day', as if they are looking at that shadow god holding up cue cards, regurgitating whatever dribble they heard and processed during their daily upload of "xtian conservative republican talking points" after filling their brain with Reich-wing propaganda.
THAT. All I need to see...crazy is as crazy be.

(130,524 posts)Beware those who claim to know the mind of God and who are prepared to use force, if necessary, to make others conform. Beware those who cannot tell God's will from their own. Temple police are always a bad sign. When chaplains start wearing guns and hanging out at the sheriff's office, watch out. Someone is about to have no king but Caesar. https://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/71455.Barbara_Brown_Taylor?page=2

(10,412 posts)Interesting to think of Orthidox Jews forbidding women to sit with them in the synagogue. And that Synagogues were reformed so that now there are Orthodox, Reform and Conservative.
The Rock Jesus referenced has been broken to Smithereens by the weight of so many different churches.
Still, Mormons take the cake for sheer will of faith.
P.S. Do my thoughts make me one to beware of? I'm a Pagan/Humanist who sings for her supper in the Episcopal church.

(114,614 posts)that there is one correct way to live one's life, that deviation from that narrow path for any reason, even being born different, will lead to an eternal disaster. That leads to bullying of the faithful by the officials and bullying of everybody else by the faithful.
And of course, women are perpetual children and natural slaves who need to be disciplined by men because our path is even more narrow and constricted than theirs is.
Of course, no two religions agree completely on the rules governing a perfect life.
Then they wonder why I have such an unsympathetic view of religion.
