Brando in that role was amazing. Col. Kurtz's nightstand held a copy of "The Golden Bough" by Sir James George Frazer. Published in 1890, it's a comparison of the world's religions and philosophies. Frazer observed that one of the great commonalities from the various cultures around the world: The warrior-philosopher-kings of history took the golden bough for themselves by defeating and taking the lives of their predecessors.
