Time matters dammit. The American people need to be shown the threat that Trump poses to our national security. This has nothing to do with politics, it has everything to do with our democracy and our national security.
Dammit I wish that Garland had appointed Smith sooner, since it will be a stretch now for a trial to happen before the election.
Trump may have the Magat nomination all but locked up by March and scheduling a Trump trial would certainly be a partisan event in Magatland. I guess DOJ only has 2 years to indict and convict someone who decides to run for president.
Donald Trump is too dangerous to be allowed near the Oval Office, waiting for more Democrats to call Trump out as a threat to our national security, the MSM won't do it, Democrats need to seek out microphones.
Fiendish Thingy
(23,219 posts)We will soon find out how quickly things will proceed in the Florida trial.
Although Willis will likely get indictments in GA next month, the speed of the trial in that venue is uncertain at present.
In the not too distant future, I expect Smith will obtain indictments for the J6 coup attempt and fraudulent electors, which almost certainly will be in DC. Although the coup case is the most complex, it doesnt involve classified information, and will be in a friendlier venue, so we might be surprised at the trial timeline for that case (it will almost certainly have numerous co-defendants who may or may not be tried together with Trump).
Since the triggering event for Smiths appointment was Trumps declaration of his candidacy, the timing was out of his hands but you knew that.
That fact that the case ended up in Cannons court means it may not have mattered even if Smith had been appointed the day Garland was sworn in (and in any case, Smith started on third base with the docs case, thanks to Garlands teams work in May-August 2022).

(115,406 posts)If the people vote for him, they are saying that the crimes committed do not matter. We will enter a new realm of criminality and authoritarianism unlike any we have ever seen, in my opinion.
If the people vote against him and the Democrats retain control, then it is a different picture. The investigations and indictments will continue.
No doubt, the Republicans will still yell "Fraud!", but the people will have spoken and the wheels of justice will continue to turn.
If there is a trial before the election, Republicans will use it to fire up their base and get out their vote next November.
The downside is that our system is damaged with each passing day. They are intent on tearing down our democracy and our "administrative state".
In my opinion, the healthiest thing that could happen to our democracy is to put Trump and his accomplices on trial. Let a jury decide if they are innocent or guilty.

(4,616 posts)something you think is different now from 2016? Dems with microphones are clearly just background noise. Elections are up to the voters. And if said voters need a pundit with a microphone to tell them how to vote, well, we see how well that has worked in the past? How many more dire warnings do you need?
