(9,647 posts)The people running to other states or countries need to realize that, in the end, there is no where to run from Fascism. A lot of people fled Germany for neighboring countries, only to fall back under the iron heel of the Nazis when those countries were conquered.

(344 posts)youre probably screwed.
Fascist regimes seldom take long to turn against straight, white men - if they don't share their fascist dogmas and sundry hatreds.
What's more, they're seen as 'race traitors' (plus, sometimes, class traitors) - and are often dealt with accordingly.

After World War II, the Nazis who helped Hitler rise to power and murder millions of people, including at least 6 million Jews, were put on trial to send a warning to the world. Not all of them faced a judicial process, but enough were not protected by their high status, official offices, or claims of innocence and patriotism. Power through violence was the only language they spokenot justice, not freedomand they were held accountable. These criminals faced a tribunal at Nürnberg (Nuremberg) so momentous that the disgraced word Nazi is forever attached to those who participated in and enabled their horrific crimes.
After the war, Germany banned Nazi flags and neo-Nazis. In fact, the only way that Nazi paraphernalia got into Germany was through smuggling from other countries such as the United States, like from Nazi propagandist Gerhard Lauck in Nebraska, the man called the Farm Belt Führer who served four years in a German prison for distributing banned pro-Nazi materials throughout Europe.
I know this because I teach a course on White Supremacy at Smith College that focuses on anti-Semitism, anti-Black racism, and the many intersecting components of white supremacist ideology. After more than 30 years of organizing and teaching about fascism as a Black feminist activist and academic, I know the destructive influence of these noxious ideas, and I teach young people how to interpret and resist them.
Global contempt for the word Nazi is a lesson for us today in the United States after the attempted criminal coup at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Anyone identified as sympathetic, supportive, or financing these seditious acts that attempted to deny the peaceful transfer of power in our country should be treated with the same public condemnation that the Nazis received after World War II. This includes Nazified people in Congress, in the media, in universities, in regular jobs, and throughout society because fascism is not the fevered dream of one delusional man. Trump is a white supremacist; that he is also a deranged narcissist is really incidental.
Continues...

(1,141 posts)In the 30s it was also attempted in the US. A cabal of rich folks and the American Legion planned to remove FDR. They asked Marine Corps General (and two time winner of the CMOH) Smedley Butler to be the face of it and lead the military arm.
Being a man of honor Smedley refused and blew the whistle. The powers that be (or were at the time) decided to downplay the plot and none of the richfolk were punished in any way.
The United States can not make that error again. Even if all that is done is to put the guilty asshats in stocks on Fifth Avenue (or Pennsylvania Avenue). Something must be done.

(15,329 posts)It cost this planet upwards of 60 - 80 million lives to get rid of Hitler, Mussolini, and the Japanese Empire. My father fought these people in the Second World War.
Auschwitz was a death factory. Sobibor, Treblinka, Bergen Belsen all gassed people to death.
So you know what? If you are anything but a white male Protestant you are likely on somebody's list. If you are gay, trans, Jewish, or a member of a racial or ethnic minority, or if you are a woman, then you are second class.
Look at what is happening. We had these Nazis marching with their tiki torches through the streets of Charlottesville chanting 'we will not be replaced' and now organizations like CPAC and others are inviting these white nationalists as speakers. They aren't even trying to hide it. We are now seeing swastikas and other Nazi symbols (and yes, I am aware the swastika is far older and more venerable that Hitler's hakenkreuz was a backwards take on this older symbol) with these losers.
Consider Republican legislatures in a number of states have been trying to suppress votes, and even to allow gun toting 'Murikans to terrorize people at polling places.
Be mindful, if you remember your undergrad poly sci classes, that an oligarchy coupled with a nationalist (theocracy) is essentially a fascist, or Nazi, type of government, and this is what many of the libertarian-leaning Republicans want, particularly the billionaire parasites like the Mercers, Kochs and others.
Reps Gosar and Greene appeared as guests last year at the America First Political Action Conference, along with other Republican officials.
And consider the right-wing 'evangelicals' - these people HATE everyone who is not white and Christian, and seem to think that women should be relegated to the kitchen as second class citizens. And their corporate-funded Federalist Society think-tank grooms new right-wing 'justices.' We've already seen how that is working out.
Honestly, if these people turn this country into an authoritarian 'white Christian' nation, you think they wouldn't set up death camps?
Really?
Must be one of those lucky folks who's never had anything taken from them.

I don't really worry about the radical right wing coming for me. They were completely unorganized on 1/6. I do worry about their lone wolf terrorism. During the civil war the south had a large organized military. These racist redneck drunks have nothing.

1/6 was a fascist attack on our nation. Americans died!
We have a former president who is inciting violence frequently.
The two most lethal elements of today's domestic terrorism threat are (1) racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists who advocate for the superiority of the white race and (2) anti-government or anti-authority violent extremists, such as militia violent extremists.
Yes someone is coming for you. If we stand down the threat will grow. If we push back the threat will be controlled. I will not stand down. No one on this site will stand down. We are under attack by the radical right wing.

(3,416 posts)Get the proper training and then keep sharp by practicing at your local firing range. Im an expert shot, I learned to shoot while being attacked by sand fleas and screamed at by drill instructors many years ago down at basic training at Parris Island boot camp. I go to the firing range every few weeks for practice. I appreciate the skill it takes to not only hit the target, but to skillfully group shots. I dont need to hunt for food and trophy hunters make my skin crawl. My point was, that these big mouth, MAGA morons, who think that they could just shoot in one direction without any return fire, would be in for a rude awakening if they played that game with me.

(118 posts)I never ran into any weird Nazi-ish shit in Texas aside from the crazy lady on my street telling me that we were under martial law in January 2021.
Texas is weird in that every Christian Republican seems to have a son in a same-sex marriage, and they are retiring to spend more time with the grandbabies.
Here is Texas in a nutshell. One of my most important clients was a Hispanic woman who celebrated all the major Jewish holidays for some reason despite being a fundamentalist Christian. She was married to a marine, had two kids who were cops, but her favorite kid was the gay one. She disliked Obama a lot, but then suddenly really really hated Trump. But also didn't like illegal immigrants.
Texas is nuts.

(114,363 posts)for weeks on end that they knew. They just didn't want to believe it. It broke their brains, quite honestly.
Admitting it would have forced them to admit what had happened to family members who had disappeared because they'd joined a trade union, or had Down's, or had a nervous breakdown, or were seen reading a book on socialism in college or were born blind or deaf, and the list of what the master race wanted to eliminate was a very long one. Families hoped against hope they'd see each other again, that they were all out in some rural garden, working and enjoying life.
Too many people had gone missing and it had been years. They knew.

(25,355 posts)the Warsaw ghetto, where they had confined thousands of Jews until they could move them to death camps, the Jews fought back. They knew what was coming and had organized themselves to fight as long as possible, take down Nazis with them, and give some people, especially children, a chance to be smuggled out.
The Warsaw ghetto resistance lasted longer than the Polish government's resistance to the German invasion of the Polish nation.

This is the way, as common citizens, we turn the tide.
The talk about armed conflict is silly. Once the U.S. military gets involved, it's all over for the side they oppose, no matter "how good of a shot" you are. They have weapons and tactics that weren't even dreamed of in 1944.
