Emptywheel: 49 weeks between indictment and trial is typical for CIPA cases

Her order is not, on its face, unreasonable. It sets a CIPA trial for 49 weeks after it was charged, which is solidly within the scope of what it normally takes to bring these cases to trial. She has made this a complex case which is similarly not unreasonable.

May 20 is pretty close. I hope it's a green card setting, as in carved in stone.

I can't see any way that being on trial the summer before the election helps his campaign, unless the media go all in to promote him as a victim. But even that approach doesn't seem like a winning strategy for a candidate who runs as a strongman bully.

And there are more indictments coming.

This trial is burdened by document classification and clearance issues. DC charges might go faster, provided they are narrowly tailored as reporting suggests. Willis is likely to act soon; RICO charges seem like a heavy lift, but he is on tape committing a crime.

I have always believed it would be better for the country politically if Trump were incarcerated before primary voting begins. A lot of Republicans would have second thoughts about nominating someone facing that much jeopardy. I thought seeing him in custody would force their hand, but perhaps his status is less important than I thought.
