E.T. pleads not guilty to US drug charges

Who knew E.T. was Venezuela's former spy chief? Either that, or they cruelly put him in some kind of neck rack to get a confession. Or the courtroom artist briefly forgot what humans look like.

An actual photo there confirms Carvajal does have normal human proportions.

Nov 13, 2019 — Mr. Carvajal, known as “El Pollo” (the chicken) for his long neck ...

Here is a photo of Carvajal, when he was a young and skinny cadet, showing his longer neck (about the time he was given the nickname)

Courtroom drawing is a prejudiced art form standing in for a disinterested technological tool; it provides an emotional interpretation instead of a freeze-frame, “art” instead of “science.”

The sketches, ultimately, are not portraits but de facto narratives. Allegory is an accurate term here, and in the staid, archetypal genre of the “courtroom drama,” the drawings are made to work like totems of innocence and guilt, good and evil, celebrity and disgrace.
