I am disgusted...

first of all, this Paula person looks pretty oily and predatory to me. Second, what is this business about sending bare chested pictures to a married woman via email??? Third, why can't these guys who have my security and that of my country in their hands keep their minds above their belt buckles? I hear all this talk about the poor General, out there in the foreign boonies, fighting the good fight...nobody is talking about his wife, Holly, who had to keep the family together, raise his kids, take care of business while the General is roaming the world. I was a "waiting wife" as they called us during the Vietnam War, and I know how hard it is to be trying to keep things together on the home front. Bullshit to these guys and bullshit to these predatory women. This whole thing is just a disgusting, badly written soap opera. I wish Holly well and hope she kicks the General to the curb, he richly deserves it. Hubris, look it up, it applies here.

their families. Not many people understand what the spouse and their families do when the soldier isn't there. I am sorry I don't give the General or any soldier a break. If the spouse is at home and is being faithfull to him/her then they should also be faithfull.

The Consumer Financial Protecion Bureau has a new office to protect service members

Consumer agency will fight to defend service members' pocketbooks

Financially inexperienced members of the military are often taken advantage of by unscrupulous merchants, but a branch of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has their back.

November 02, 2011|By Jim Puzzanghera, Los Angeles Times

...

The federal government has launched an initiative to prevent companies from taking advantage of young, often financially inexperienced service members.

To head the effort, it has enlisted Holly Petraeus (wife of CIA Director and former Army Gen. David H. Petraeus), a longtime advocate for military families who said that as an Army wife she was once ripped off by an unscrupulous landlord.

"I think a lot of people are surprised to think of the military as a target for unethical business practices or abuses," said Petraeus, head of the military affairs office at the recently opened Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

"But the fact is that they have an absolutely guaranteed paycheck; it comes in twice a month, and they're not going to quit or be laid off."

her own as he is back and forth between the US and the Middle East, but she has taken on the care and guidance of so many other 'waiting wives' (never heard that before!) that would be lost without her. We lived through a ME deployment and if anyone thinks the role of the spouse is easy, mm mm no brother! Not even. She has definitely been on my mind and I appreciate you reminding everyone about her.

The reason she's on my mind is because the betrayal would be bad enough on its own, but the very public betrayal has to make it that much worse.

Imagine this email from a long-time male friend:

"Hey (close friend)! Here's some pictures from our vacation at the beach!"

oooooooo!!! Scandalous!!!!!!!! Why, clearly he should have worn a 3-piece suit to the beach instead of a pair of trunks!!!

While there's been ample reporting about the fact that there are "bare chested pictures", there is no reporting on the context of those pictures. It's heavily insinuated that they are lurid, but there's no actual reporting that they are lurid.

I have read some very awful comments about Holly Petraeus, about her looks, etc. (not on DU), and it just burns me how women are still measured by their looks, even after a certain age.

What is the "predatory women" crap? Are these generals so fucking helpless in the presence of an attractive female that they just can't think straight? And who was likely to be more predatory? The young attractive female underlings or the ugly, old enough to be their father, ego infested generals accustomed to the whole world bowing down to their self-imposed greatness? And in the military where the cultural norm is for women to be so hated and vilified that rape and sexual harassment are a constant theme and where the persistence of the culture comes from the top down?

This "predatory women" horseshit is what wraps women in burkas - it's the same exact mindset that believes that men in the presence of women are rendered entirely helpless and utterly unable to keep their dicks in their pants whether the women want their attentions or not and this is the fault of the women.

All throughout DU for days since the story came out is full of nothing but these women - not the idiot generals - blaming them for being predatory, spies, Mata Hari's, and described with all sorts of sexist terms (broads, dames, chicks, etc.). Barely anything at all about what these stupid ego-infested generals did to themselves and the nation. THEY were the ones with the responsibility. THEY were the ones who should have known better. THEY were the ones that should have kept their brains in their heads and their dicks in their pants.
