[Quote] A pregnant woman having a miscarriage was found late last month caught in the wire, doubled over in pain.
in the latest of far too many episodes of cruelty is the point, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered his private army of border goons to string razor wire along and under the surface of the Rio Grande, to prevent migrants in seeking legal asylum from entering the United States.
holy shit, razor wire, much of it submerged under water.
and the horror stories just keep coming, one after another.

He should be charged with per-meditated mass murder because his donor profited off COVID patients, many of whom died because Abbott wanted them sick by lying about COVID.

So I've learned never to let people into the house unnecessarily.
She's also, by extension, opposite my MC.
When I was in my teens, a lot of people hated me because - I gathered - they were convinced I'd be "somebody someday."
I later learned I was cursed multiple times back then.
If they only knew how I struggled - and still do.
Oh, well.

Do you know the history of the religion, and all of the people they have gleefully tortured and murdered over the course of that history? Just what do you think they were up to with the Crusades, Inquisitions, witch burnings, pogroms, the enslavement and torture of Africans (fueled by the religion declaring it acceptable because their book supports it--which it does), wiping out indigenous peoples in in the New World and Oceania for being "savages," the Holocaust--
Why would you be surprised at any of them being okay with something like this, when they have such a history? Why be surprised when they not only celebrate their demigod for beating the crap out of people over a non-violent offense, but also have a foundational belief that it's okay to torture people forever for disagreeing with them?
This is who far too many of them are. They've only been demonstrating it for centuries now.

Beto O'Rourke is calling on President Biden to take over and fix this. It should never be up to Texas or any other state to police our national borders. The federal government is the only entity with jurisdiction, therefore it's up to the feds to handle this.

(90,021 posts)like this? When all they're doing is trying to get to America? A place they somehow still idealize - even while today's America puts, AND HIDES, razor wire whose only reason for being is to rake flesh and do harm and serious pain and be there not as a mere divider but as an actual proven physical threat?
What on earth is there to idealize - about THAT???
Whatever happened to that song that everybody'd sing with pride, whose lyrics mentioned "huddled masses yearning to breathe free"? Do we sing along because it sounds nice and we managed to memorize the lyrics (that obviously mean nothing to far too many people)? Or do those lyrics even mean anything anymore?

(90,021 posts)Maybe under cover of darkness? I'm just guessing. I don't know the turf or the river - or its seasonal idiosyncrasies. But seems to me it's worthwhile to try to think outside the box. To try to think AROUND the barricades that the bad guys put up - both physically AND psychologically. How could we get around that? What kinds of alternative approaches could there be? Like - there's only so much of that killer barbed wire that's been set up? Could there be a raft or rowboat approach to ferry women and children beyond the length of the barricade, where it's too deep to cross? Should a Geneva Convention-style entity be set up, or other high-profile international human rights group be brought in? Should strategies be arranged for the wee hours of the morning, or during shift change from the guards?
Is the ENTIRE LENGTH of the Rio Grande marred by physical barriers and hidden slasher-wire? Are there other areas where it's not so closely guarded because the bad guys don't think there'll be a problem there?
We HAVE TO start thinking more creatively, or urging fellow activists who might be involved in planning and strategy. It's not just thinking outside the box. It's thinking beyond the barricades.
BTW - I just came up with the term "slasher wire." Cuz it's designed to DO that to human flesh. If anybody wants to use it, by all means please do! I think it helps describe the wire more accurately, and vividly, AND very much actively-negative, than calling it "barbed wire." From everything I've heard about it, t's SOOOOO much worse and inflicts SOOOOO much greater and deeper injury than the barbed wire a lot of us have seen over the years. This seems to be new stuff. New and deliberately much meaner. MEANT to hurt. MEANT to draw actual blood. Maybe we should call it the extreme that it is. I think "slasher wire" might be a helpful term. It connotes all kinds of grizzly mental images, much of it stemming from the term "slasher movies."

(13,480 posts)Many communities along the border have ties with Mexico, not with those from Central American countries, and they worry that their communities are being overrun. Many of these communities are also relatively poor, so being asked to care for hundreds or even thousands of migrants is an enormous burden. The state government makes it worse because they could help the federal government disperse those granted asylum to other parts of Texas and allow them to work, but Abbot is more interested in making political points with his anti-immigrant backersthe very ones who knowingly hire migrants and undocumented workers. In reality, the Texas economy depends on migrant labor, but despicable Abbott will never admit that.

(4,741 posts)Especially this part of it:
Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.
--Leviticus 25:44-46
And before you try that hoary old tapdance of, "but that was the old part, not the new one..."
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
--Matthew 5:17-18
Last I looked the earth is still here, so guess what?
This is the problem with relying on the book. For every supposedly "good" thing in it, 10X as many bad things are there to refute what little good it expresses (and that's a very precious little). None of the rare good is unique to the book or to the religion. Worse, the bad in it is so bad that it downright negates what little good it has in it.

(4,741 posts)Whenever people trot out that fake christian scam, you're saying that people like this can't be christian, because, to you, all christians are good people, so anyone who does something bad had to be not-christian, because you think only not-christians are bad and immoral.
I have news for you, mate: christians can be plenty bad, all on their own. There is absolutely zero bloody evidence that not-christians had anything to do with creating bad people like this. That's all on the christian religion. No one and nothing else.
We not christians are tired of being slandered, libeled and falsely accused and blamed for evil that we had no part in.
Shame on you for blaming people who had nothing to do with making this scumbag so evil.

(6,269 posts)Abbott, Desantis AND trump we have 3 voted into office. Who is at fault for these three being in charge of political machines?
American voters
Abbott let a major electrical grid fail in winter and caused untold misery for hundreds of thousands, yet he is still on the scene with power that affects millions. Razor wire submerged to catch people trying to escape their own corrupt governments, crime and misery?
Just evil.
Put the n******in their place Desantis wants a return to segregation, 'sundown towns' voter suppression and suppression of civil rights. And he's seriously running for the presidency?
The former president trump is running a major political Party. Almost staged a coup d'etat and wants a second chance. 'nuf said. And so far millions are willing to give him the chance
Why?
Ignorance, stupidity, evil minds afraid of becoming a minority? So fascism is the way for the types above.
We are stronger than them. And while all Americans IT IS them vs us.

It has to stop and Beto calls on Biden to stop this.
