(29,341 posts)It was right after I started Kindergarten, my dad was walking me to school & I suddenly noticed I could see the moon. I was truly amazed and couldn't understand why Pop was not as awestruck when I pointed it out to him.
I was 5.

(4,002 posts)Years ago I really loved the game Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri. Sid Meier is the guy who created the Civilization game series. The premise was Earth is screwed so time to leave.
I always enjoyed the game because there was one faction, "The Believers". They were religious fanatics. Every game I would find them on the new planet and FUXXIN WIPE THEM OUT". It made the game fun.
But the whole plot of leaving Earth registered. Even years ago I could see this as something realistic.
Its a great game. It's available on Great Old Games for download. I still play it from time to time.

(4,002 posts)I never knew that. I admired his work at Firaxis games early on. Civilization is legendary as a game series. I wonder if he used his personal beliefs creating the fanatical "Believers" sect in the game?
From Civilization Wiki:
A fundamentalist faction wary of secular technology, led by Sister Miriam Godwinson (Unity's chaplain) from the Christian States of America.
Christian States of America... that does sound ominous

Both CSAs are terrifying.

(3,096 posts)fair, there are a hell of a lot of people who are either confused by planetary orbits and their relativity, and even more people who don't even have a clue how it all works. There's a lot to know. It was years before I was interested enough to study it a little and even now, I get confused by it sometimes and have to really think about what I'm seeing in order to understand why it is the way it is. There's a lot going on, and a lot of things in motion, not the least of that the earth is spinning to confuse the ever-changing perspective even more.
I do find it a bit frustrating though that instead of looking for answers, some people just make them up. There's more than enough of that to go around.
