FTR, I live in Florida and I approve of none of DeSantis' proclamations. He's such a nasty piece of work.
DeSantis rocked by Black Republican revolt over slavery comments

The bitter fight between Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Rep. Byron Donalds over a line about slavery in the states revised African American history standards is infuriating several prominent Black conservatives.

At issue are the new education standards for how Black history is taught in Florida schools that DeSantis signed into law last year. The revised guidelines, released this month, require educators to instruct middle schoolers that slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.
Donalds, who largely praised the guidelines as good, robust and accurate, took issue with the idea of personal benefit and said that part is wrong and needs to be adjusted. Donalds supported DeSantis for governor but has backed Trump in the presidential primary.
That prompted an onslaught from the DeSantis camp. Christina Pushaw, the director of rapid response for the DeSantis presidential campaign, mused, Did Kamala Harris write this tweet? referencing the vice presidents recent trip to Florida, in which she denounced the new standards.
DeSantis dug in, disparaging his fellow Republican with one of the worst insults one can lob: comparing him to a Democrat. Are you going to side with Kamala Harris and liberal media outlets or are you going to side with the state of Florida?

DeSantis and his base of assholes have made Floriduh a pariah and a shit hole. I wouldn't enter the state if my life depended on it.

(12,046 posts)Have no problem with a total erosion of civil rights and opposing any policy that promotes racial equality but saying slavery was good for black people is a bridge too far good to know.

(35,088 posts)Sort of a first they came for them, now they're coming for me epiphany. Grimy d is trying to normalize slavery while at the same time erasing history. That mother fucker knows what he's doing. He understands that when you forget about history that the same deplorable shit can happen all over again. Instead of changing course, he's quadrupling down. This is what I've been talking about for years--when d and other assholes complain about woke, they are specifically referring to black people.
Tim Scott and others need to think twice about what they are ushering into this country because this "dismantling of the administrative state" bullshit that rethugs are drooling about would strip us off all of our rights. Every single right. I'm surprised they don't see that. It's really sad and heartbreaking because so many people died fighting for our rights.

(22,970 posts)Old gqp tactic: take the sting out of an ugly statement by weaseling out one irrelevant aspect of it that is technically true, while completely ignoring the real purpose: minimizing the impact of white supremacy talk by arguing semantics.
