The above link is a tweet from RFK Junior that reads:
Typical turnaround time for pro forma protection requests from presidential candidates is 14-days. After 88-days of no response and after several follow-ups by our campaign, the Biden Administration just denied our request. Secretary Mayorkas: "I have determined that Secret Service protection for Robert F Kennedy Jr is not warranted at this time."
Our campaign's request included a 67-page report from the world's leading protection firm, detailing unique and well established security and safety risks aside from commonplace death threats.
This is not true. There is no "pro forma" protection or "turnaround time." Secret Service protection is granted only a few months before election day to candidates. He's lying and using hate symbols as a dogwhistle.
https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbols/search
The symbol is most commonly written as 1488 or 14/88, but variations such as 14-88 or 8814 are also common.
Fuck this guy.

ALTERNATE NAMES: Combat 18, C18
18 is a white supremacist alphanumeric code for Adolf Hitler (1=A and 8=H). It is most commonly associated with the British white supremacist group Combat 18 or C18. Occasionally, Combat 18 cells appear in the United States, but they tend to be small and short-lived.

WhiskeyGrinder
(26,955 posts)bronxiteforever
(11,212 posts)Which candidates for President does the Secret Service protect?
In regard to presidential campaign, the Secret Service is authorized by law (18 United States Code § 3056) to protect:
Major presidential and vice presidential candidates and their spouses within 120 days of a general presidential election. As defined in statute, the term "major presidential and vice presidential candidates" means those individuals identified as such by the Secretary of Homeland Security after consultation with an advisory committee.
The Secret Service provides protection for major candidates, unless declined.
The Secret Service has no role in determining who is to be considered a major candidate. The Secretary of the Homeland Security determines who qualifies as a major candidate and when such protection should commence under the authority of Title 18, United States Code, Section 3056. This determination is made in consultation with an advisory committee comprised of the following individuals:
Speaker of the House
House Minority Whip
Senate Majority Leader
Senate Minority Leader
One additional member chosen by the committee
So the decision on who the major candidates are comes from the Congress and Secretary of Homeland Security.

(8,178 posts)Actually, to be more specific, White Pride had become a "thing" or rational as the motivational meme to attain white power.
about 15 or so years ago, one of my "housemates" revealed his white supremacists attitudes
in an argument we had inexplicably gotten into with regards to the issue of "illegal immigrants".
After a long heated exchange, he asked me : Don't you have any White Pride?
I've never been asked that question, nor have I ever heard anyone claim they were "proud" to be white before then
It was really shocking and weird to me, because before that moment there was no clue whatsoever that he held these views.
Since then, I developed a sort of radar for white pride attitudes in my midst.
Sometimes I get it wrong, because I tend to associate appearance and demeanor with white supremacists, but it's fraught with stereotyping leading to unintended consequences.

(3,210 posts)Last I checked, you could only view individual tweets (no replies) unless you were a member and logged in. That really limits the usefulness of Twitter and turns it into an echo chamber, since you can't see the pushback from the public. And then Elon reinstated all the Nazi accounts which had been previously deplatformed, turning it into (as you say) a cesspool.
I think things like Mastodon are going to be the future of social media, simply because they are not set up as a business that can be monopolized. Ironically, I expect at least a few commercial enterprises to eventually decamp Twitter as it becomes more toxic. Some businesses will not tolerate the constant racism, anti-Semitism, and conspiratorial tone that increasingly defines Twitter. After all, you are known by the company that you keep.

(3,384 posts)And after the story exploded in the media, he expressly and specifically denied this allegation, which I think is an intentional misinterpretation of what he said at that informal dinner gathering. He was referring to a well-established fact that enzyme expression differs among various ethnic groups (polymorphism), with the ACE-2 Covid factor being differentially expressed in Chinese and Ashkenazi subgroups. That's an uncontroversial finding, similar to how many Asians don't metabolize alcohol well due to a deficiency of the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme. That's not being racist or anti-Asian, it's an objectively verified fact.
Can you point to anything else that he has said or done that is neo-Nazi or anti-Semitic? Surely he must have left a long trail of statements and behaviors to justify using such a strong descriptor.

Is that person, a DUer, a neo-Nazi as well?

WhiskeyGrinder
(26,955 posts)*I* posted an OP explaining why the numbers used in RFK Jr.s tweet are symbols of neonazis and white supremacists, because it was apparent that people arent familiar with this use of code. Are you saying that educating people on these hare symbols are equal in intent and effect to those using them as intended as dogwhistles to indicate affinity to others who understand the code?
SickOfTheOnePct
(8,710 posts)Its good to educate people on hate symbols; I have no issue with that whatsoever.
I do take issue with the assumption that every time some uses a number that has been identified as a hate symbol that is somehow proof that the person is a neo-Nazi.
If I post that I agree with another post 100%, does that identify me as a neo-Nazi, since the ADL says 100% is a hate symbol?
Does the fact that a poster in this thread used the number 18 mean that poster is a neo-Nazi, since the ADL says that 18 is a hate symbol?
Of course not, but based on your OP, any use of such numbers screams neo-Nazi!!!!
