Know your hate symbols. A Democratic candidate for president used one today.

The above link is a tweet from RFK Junior that reads:

Since the assassination of my father in 1968, candidates for president are provided Secret Service protection. But not me.

Typical turnaround time for pro forma protection requests from presidential candidates is 14-days. After 88-days of no response and after several follow-ups by our campaign, the Biden Administration just denied our request. Secretary Mayorkas: "I have determined that Secret Service protection for Robert F Kennedy Jr is not warranted at this time."
Our campaign's request included a 67-page report from the world's leading protection firm, detailing unique and well established security and safety risks aside from commonplace death threats.

This is not true. There is no "pro forma" protection or "turnaround time." Secret Service protection is granted only a few months before election day to candidates. He's lying and using hate symbols as a dogwhistle.

https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbols/search

1488 is a combination of two popular white supremacist numeric symbols. The first symbol is 14, which is shorthand for the "14 Words" slogan: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." The second is 88, which stands for "Heil Hitler" (H being the 8th letter of the alphabet). Together, the numbers form a general endorsement of white supremacy and its beliefs. As such, they are ubiquitous within the white supremacist movement - as graffiti, in graphics and tattoos, even in screen names and e-mail addresses, such as aryanprincess1488@hate.net. Some white supremacists will even price racist merchandise, such as t-shirts or compact discs, for $14.88.

The symbol is most commonly written as 1488 or 14/88, but variations such as 14-88 or 8814 are also common.

Fri Jul 28, 2023, 09:21 PM
Jul 2023

Which candidates for President does the Secret Service protect?

In regard to presidential campaign, the Secret Service is authorized by law (18 United States Code § 3056) to protect:
Major presidential and vice presidential candidates and their spouses within 120 days of a general presidential election. As defined in statute, the term "major presidential and vice presidential candidates" means those individuals identified as such by the Secretary of Homeland Security after consultation with an advisory committee.
The Secret Service provides protection for major candidates, unless declined.
The Secret Service has no role in determining who is to be considered a major candidate. The Secretary of the Homeland Security determines who qualifies as a major candidate and when such protection should commence under the authority of Title 18, United States Code, Section 3056. This determination is made in consultation with an advisory committee comprised of the following individuals:
Speaker of the House
House Minority Whip
Senate Majority Leader
Senate Minority Leader
One additional member chosen by the committee

So the decision on who the major candidates are comes from the Congress and Secretary of Homeland Security.

Actually, to be more specific, White Pride had become a "thing" or rational as the motivational meme to attain white power.

about 15 or so years ago, one of my "housemates" revealed his white supremacists attitudes
in an argument we had inexplicably gotten into with regards to the issue of "illegal immigrants".

After a long heated exchange, he asked me : Don't you have any White Pride?

I've never been asked that question, nor have I ever heard anyone claim they were "proud" to be white before then

It was really shocking and weird to me, because before that moment there was no clue whatsoever that he held these views.

Since then, I developed a sort of radar for white pride attitudes in my midst.

Sometimes I get it wrong, because I tend to associate appearance and demeanor with white supremacists, but it's fraught with stereotyping leading to unintended consequences.

Last I checked, you could only view individual tweets (no replies) unless you were a member and logged in. That really limits the usefulness of Twitter and turns it into an echo chamber, since you can't see the pushback from the public. And then Elon reinstated all the Nazi accounts which had been previously deplatformed, turning it into (as you say) a cesspool.

I think things like Mastodon are going to be the future of social media, simply because they are not set up as a business that can be monopolized. Ironically, I expect at least a few commercial enterprises to eventually decamp Twitter as it becomes more toxic. Some businesses will not tolerate the constant racism, anti-Semitism, and conspiratorial tone that increasingly defines Twitter. After all, you are known by the company that you keep.

And after the story exploded in the media, he expressly and specifically denied this allegation, which I think is an intentional misinterpretation of what he said at that informal dinner gathering. He was referring to a well-established fact that enzyme expression differs among various ethnic groups (polymorphism), with the ACE-2 Covid factor being differentially expressed in Chinese and Ashkenazi subgroups. That's an uncontroversial finding, similar to how many Asians don't metabolize alcohol well due to a deficiency of the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme. That's not being racist or anti-Asian, it's an objectively verified fact.

Can you point to anything else that he has said or done that is neo-Nazi or anti-Semitic? Surely he must have left a long trail of statements and behaviors to justify using such a strong descriptor.

of RFK is that he's been too supportive of Israel w/r/t their I/P policies.

So I find it hard to believe that he'd all of a sudden reveal himself to be an anti-Semitic Nazi. Again, listen to his actual words, not the second-hand commentaries. Two sentences, with all the qualifiers removed by "..." in the articles and commentaries, does not make anyone a Nazi.

Is that person, a DUer, a neo-Nazi as well?

Or is the more reasonable explanation that just because the ADL lists a number or combo of numbers as a hate symbol, that doesn’t mean that every single use of that number or combo of numbers always means that person is a neo-Nazi?

*I* posted an OP explaining why the numbers used in RFK Jr.’s tweet are symbols of neonazis and white supremacists, because it was apparent that people aren’t familiar with this use of code. Are you saying that educating people on these hare symbols are equal in intent and effect to those using them as intended — as dogwhistles to indicate affinity to others who understand the code?

It’s good to educate people on hate symbols; I have no issue with that whatsoever.

I do take issue with the assumption that every time some uses a number that has been identified as a hate symbol that is somehow proof that the person is a neo-Nazi.

If I post that I agree with another post 100%, does that identify me as a neo-Nazi, since the ADL says 100% is a hate symbol?

Does the fact that a poster in this thread used the number 18 mean that poster is a neo-Nazi, since the ADL says that 18 is a hate symbol?

Of course not, but based on your OP, any use of such numbers screams “neo-Nazi!!!!”

it might also have something to do with the company he keeps, such as tertiary syphilitic whiskey soaked Bannon and Conehead Roger Stone; that he's demanding the incumbent Democratic president he's pretending to challenge provide him with something he doesn't deserve, can afford himself, and is publicly whining about it; and the reality that the domestic terrorists who are twisted enough to kill political rivals love his Nazi ass.

"Typical turnaround time for pro forma protection requests from presidential candidates is 14-days. After 88-days of no response.."

It's not normal to write "14-days" or "88-days", rather than "14 days" and "88 days". It's as if the writer (who I'd expect is an RFK Jr. staffer) was trying to draw the attention of certain people (the neo-Nazi anti-vax type) to the numbers.

He could have actually believed there was a typical turnaround time of 14 days, even though there wasn't. And if the response had actually taken exactly 88 days, I might have chalked it up to coincidence.

But it's patently obvious he intentionally chose those two exact numbers.

If he's not careful he's going to start drawing votes away from trump.
