When their hatred backfires.

Two Moms for Liberty members in San Diego thought they could stop a library from displaying LGBTQ books during pride month, so they checked out EVERY book, and sent an email saying they would refuse to return them unless the library promised to permanently remove them.

Overdue Materials Policy

The San Diego Public Library is no longer charging users a daily overdue fee for items returned late. Under this new policy, items can be checked out for their standard loan period and, if eligible, renewed up to five times. Library cardholders are responsible for returning or renewing items to prevent their library card from being blocked or barred.

Materials are considered late one day after they are due to the Library. Library card holders may still renew items currently checked out, use our e-resources and access the Internet at any of the 36 San Diego Public Library locations.

If you have an overdue item, your library card will be blocked and you will not be able to check out any additional items. You are still able to use the library and renew other materials you have checked out.

We will send you an email when your Library materials are seven, 14, and 30 days overdue to alert you that you must return or renew them. When materials are 60 days overdue the Library considers the items lost and will mail you a bill for the cost of the items. Your library card will be barred, preventing you from renewing or checking out items. If you return the item in good condition within two months of the bill, the replacement fee will be waived.

When materials are 90 days overdue, if you haven’t returned materials or paid the bill, you will be mailed an invoice. If the invoice is not paid within 30 days, your debt will be transferred to the Office of the City Treasurer. Your library card will be barred until the Library Department is notified by the City Treasurer that the invoice and service fees have been paid.

I don't know how aggressive the City Treasurer's office is in pursuing library collections, but I would imagine they have the resources to do so if they chose to. I hope they choose to, if it comes to that.

My bet is on Leonard Leo, the billionaire Catholic misogynist and bigot who got six right-wing religious radicals on the SC.

I am currently reading a book about the role women and parents played in preserving segregation and Jim Crow laws, as well as quietly ensuring that textbooks portrayed the Civil War not as a fight to maintain slavery but as a states’ rights issue and neglected any mention of the evils of slavery. Women’s groups and their leaders were instrumental in protests and book banning. I suspect Moms for Liberty is simply copying their tactics but also applying them to LGBTQ+.

If anyone is interested, the book is Mothers of Massive Resistence, White Women and the Politics of White Supremacy, by Elizabeth Gillespie McRae.

I don't know how big that library is or how many books but wouldn't that raise a few alarm bells?

"Good morning (smiles) we'd like to check out every book in this library."

"Oh sure, no problem. Just back your rent a truck from Hertz up to the front door and we'll help you load them."

or: "Uh, suuure, just let me make a phone call here..."

I'm guessing that they got the books at that one library.

It would have been a lot...but maybe not. Depends on the library. Some branch libraries can be on the small side, even in a large city.

I just took a look at the lending rules, and SDPL lets people check out 100 regular books, and then 100 "express" books, which are publisher loans.

So two people could have easily checked out 400 books, which could have been the entire LGBT collection at a small branch.

If it was just the LGBT books they stole, then sure no problem.

Just get a team together as suggested and they'd no doubt just figure the collection was real popular.

"They're flying off the shelves. Maybe we should order more on that subject?"

Little did they know...

...or at least that's how I read it and I can't be alone in this as evidenced by other poster's confusion too.

It obviously applied to books addressing LQBTQ issues and they were probably all checked out in batches by a team over a short period of time so it didn't raise any alarm bells.

Their theft of these books failed to achieve their objective spectacularly.

Now the library is gay as it can be!

Libraries normally limit the number of books you can check out at a time. How did two women get every LGBTQ book in the collection? It had to be hundreds of them.
