I'm just alarmed at hearing that Florida is afflicted with malaria, dengue, and leprosy! Despite their poor selection of a governor, Floridians may need some drastic intervention with some Federal assistance to stop these diseases.
I think that mosquitoes and heat are the culprits. Could hurricanes spread these vectors all around in a kind of soup? My gawd, Florida, I thought your alligators and snakes were frightening enough to stay away, but this is terrible! My heart goes out to you.
I recall that the island of St. Maarten, which is an island administered in halves by two different countries, was vainly attempting to eradicate mosquitoes with spraying. The problem was, the other country half was not trying at all. So, dengue fever is/was rampant. It seems like a little cooperation would have helped.
I don't know about the wisdom of spraying poison all around town, but maybe genetic engineering could help?
Despite the fact that Repubs want to destroy the CDC, I don't think we can ignore these threats.
Leprosy?? How do you even catch it enough to generate a statistic on that? Whatsup with that?
Sleep under netting, Florida...maybe bring masks back as a stylish statement of defiance. Is it still legal to wear a mask in public?

(8,103 posts)50% effective. Leprosy seems easy to cure and control. Should this vaccine be readily offered for preventive measures?
A lot of times, countries require vaccinations for entering visitors. Should Florida have a recommended list of vaccinations beyond childhood vaccinations?
I am planning for a raft of vaccinations, including shingles. Never considered BCG, however. Could you catch leprosy at an airport?

(13,640 posts)iodine in salt. They didnt do that back in the old country when grandma was a kid.
Im sure some MAGAT will eventually object to the adulteration of salt with iodine, just as their predecessors did decades ago with fluoride in drinking water.

.the issue of vaccinations became an increasing part of the culture wars & the culture wars went into overdrive. It didnt matter how many people died because they ate horse-wormer instead of getting a jab they asserted their freedom to be blithering idiots.
Nobody on that side understands even the basics of science any more, and they dont believe in the concept of public health measures.
They are going to be very hard to help.

(108,778 posts)Yeah we get it - you're asking "the questions", but that doesn't mean that anyone cares, or wants to hear your bullshit. We can also blame Trump for hawking bogus COVID cures like Ivermectin and propping up unbelievably stupid people like Stella Immanuel, the anti-vax "doctor" (term used loosely) saying that COVID came from lizard people. And then it being echoed through shit programs like Joe Rogan and Tucker Carlson. Holy shit, we really do live in the stupid time line. Only a matter of time before Congress turns into the House Of Representin'.

(13,431 posts)My ex D-I-L refused to get the children vaccinated because she read it caused autism even though it was pointed out that it was debunked. I remember my son had to go to court to get them vaccinated. That likely helped when he got 50/50 custody with him getting primary care. Funny thing she did not complain at all about covid vaccinations.

(151,267 posts)As the sea level rises, it won't be possible to avoid that. Worse, as the temperature rises, it will become more and more tropical, and tropical stuff is going to continue to come to that state, including diseases, etc.
If I lived there, I'd be selling and moving somewhere else while it's still economically possible. At some point, property values are going to go down in Florida...way down. Maybe sooner than people think.

(576 posts)I was in Florida in February. This exotic looking lizard ran across the road. My friend, who lives there, had never seen one before. We googled it and found it was an African rainbow lizard, newly invasive to southern FL! They should change FL's nickname to the "invasive state". (That would cover critters and people!)
