My understanding is that when Trump asked him to back the big lie and decline to accept the outcome of the election, he went to several people to ask their opinion, including former Vice President Quayle, who told him that that would be unconstitutional and a grave mistake, and it was only after that that he decided to do the right thing. However, suddenly he is beating his chest about his honesty and patriotism, but only after he was subpoenaed by Jack Smith and got nervous about trying to play it both ways. By this time next week hell be asking for a Profiles in Courage commendation.

(638 posts)openly calling him a liar.. instead of , yet again, discouraging defections, too many democrats are making it difficult for others to defect..
Why would anyone defect from the Trump Fascists if they know they will be attacked by the Trump fascists and ridiculed by the Democrats?
Welcome his new found voice because we cannot afford to lose this next election!

(82,849 posts)So very humble. And so very much to be humble about, including having a moral compass or knowing right from wrong.

(8,387 posts)I mean, its gotta be cool to feel like Pharoah in Exodus, deciding which plagues will befall Indiana by your own decree, but, cmon, he wasnt the hero of that story.

(15,463 posts)But those in the GOP -that stood up, and stood against, the attempt to steal the election (and Pence is self evidently one of these) - deserve recognition for being some of the courageous few, amongst many.
If we didn't have people in state offices and election offices, throughout the country - exhibiting integrity, backbone and character - we'd be in a very, very dark place right now. Far too many have demonstrated (during that same period) that they have none of those qualities. And the ones that did, and do - deserve credit where credit is due.

(22,590 posts)Whatever any of us may think of Mike Pence (I have never been a fan myself, after his attacks on reproductive rights as governor of Indiana), it's an indisputable fact that he did the right thing on January 6. Yeah, he asked a some people for advice, but that's probably because Trump gaslighted him so hard that he got to the point of not being comfortable trusting his own judgment. He could have just caved and gone along with Trump, but instead he went to people whose judgment he knew he could trust to get a reality check. That seems commendable to me rather than a sign of weakness. In a lot of ways, it would have been a lot easier to for him go with the flow, and I have to give him credit for not doing that.
I think we all need to get used to this "new, improved" Pence 2.0, because if you can believe the pundits on MSNBC, he may end up being Jack Smith's star witness when this thing goes to trial. Will any of us like him any better if his testimony ends up helping put Trump away? I think I will. Not enough to make me forgive him for trying to treat Indiana women like criminals for getting an abortion or even having a miscarriage, but enough to make me sit up and go, "Hey, nice work, Mikey!"

(12,533 posts)This is not a profile in courage; it's the profile of a weasel, a hypocritical weasel at that. Pence can pound his chest all he wants. The man could not call out Trump even after his devoted followers were calling to have him hanged. The man went to frigging Dan Quayle to confirm that he did not have the authority to reject the electors, then reportedly whined about how hard it was to resist the MAGA pressure.
Now, suddenly he finds the courage to deem himself a hero for choosing the Constitution over Trump.
A fucking weather vane has more courage!
I'm so sick of these people!
