This infuriates me

I'm not going to lie, this makes me incredibly upset & angry.

This is a solid blue district. This is the district right next door to Uvalde. I don't understand why our House leadership is backing an anti-choice NRA A+ rated Democrat in 2024 when Henry Cuellar will most certainly have a progressive challenger (hopefully Jessica Cisneros again who almost beat him last time.)

I don't understand the logic here at all in an age when we all know what guns do & when many women, including me, have lost our rights.

Someone please make this make sense because it's driving absolutely bonkers & really is upsetting me, so much so I've had to edit this 3x for grammar. I want to understand. Thank you.

With well over a year before the 2024 election, and as a pro-choice immigration rights attorney is reportedly weighing a primary run, all four of the top Democratic leaders in the U.S. House on Thursday announced their support for anti-abortion rights Rep. Henry Cuellar in his reelection bid.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Pete Aguilar (Calif.), Minority Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (Mass.), and Assistant Democratic Leader Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.) all announced their endorsements of the right-wing Democrat, who has represented Texas' 28th district since 2005.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.) also voiced their support for Cuellar, who in addition to being the only anti-abortion rights Democrat in the House, has an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association indicating his anti-gun control views.

Wondering why the influential top Democrats are focusing on Cuellar's district at this point, advocate and political strategist Jen Bluestein called the leaders' move "galling" considering the ongoing Republican attacks on abortion rights across the country.

Because I'm thinking there's many more Democrats who are anti-NRA and pro-choice than the ones you mentioned

Every Democrat I know personally owns one or more guns and many are religious or believe in a creator. This type of post only divides Democrats. IMO.

The NRA and gun owners are two different things. You think all gun owners are NRA members? Wrong. If you want everyone to be like you you are in the wrong party. You don't make sense believing in God = not pro choice you say, then you say you are Christian and believe in Abortion. WTF?

My feeling it's very inappropriate, albeit unfortunately common, for people to leap from confusion to anger. And this is not a simple world -- sometimes what would seem to be ideological support is undermining, and vice versa.

Unless, of course, we're talking about what the Republicans may be up to -- THEIR reputation supports automatic suspicions of wrongdoing and betrayal.

Ours does not.

She'll likely beat him. She came within 300 votes last time despite Cuellar having the backing of House leadership. And now that Roe v. Wade has fallen, she's got a real good chance of defeating him clear & sound. She's a good progressive Dem.

The problem was she wasn't well known & was severely out spent. She's now known & she'll likely have big backing from big progressive groups especially since the election was so close last time.

That's if she decides to run at all. She hasn't said yes or no yet.

She both outraised and outspent Henry Cuellar, including Cuellar's expenditures on the general election race.

https://www.opensecrets.org/races/candidates?cycle=2022&id=TX28

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2022 cycle was the second time Cisneros challenged Cuellar in the primary (Justice Democrats recruited her in 2020), so she was known in the district at the time of her second defeat, which occurred after the Dobbs decision leaked.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cisneros had "big backing" from "big progressive groups" last time around, and it didn't help, perhaps because TX-28 is a "likely Democrat" district (as opposed to "solid blue" ) according to Cook Political Report.

Whether or not it’s a solid blue district if a more progressive candidate is the nominee.

Cuellar won by ~14 points in 2022, so seems solid blue. But I haven’t looked at elections in that district , so so t really know.

Immigration rights attorney is probably the worst career choice that a candidate could have in a border congressional district. The anti-immigrant sentiment is so strong that anyone that aligns with immigrants will lose in the general election.

The real issue is who can bring jobs to the congressional district. Cuellar has demonstrated his ability to do that, Cisneros has not. If Cisneros is the nominee then I can see the 28th CD flipping red. Those who doubt what I'm saying should look to the adjacent 15th CD which flipped red in 2022 as I predicted and feared.
