As a woman myself, I have that moral right. "Chick" is not in the least derogatory.

Jaysus Joe, even the diabetic community is up in arms over the term "diabetic" (offensive) vs. "person with diabetes" (politically correct). I don't give a shit, I am a DIABETIC, and if you have diabetes too, I consider you a diabetic too.

There are very offensive words that should never be used, of course, but if that's what you are, YOU should get to decide, not your cyber neighbor.

related words: skirt, doll, dame, bird

Since you are advocating learning about language then you also know that any word, with the wrong tone of voice can be condescending, rude, mean, taken differently....

"Thank you", depending on the tone of voice and context, means a million different things. Should we ban that?

I'm OK with you not liking "chick" but the way you put people down is much more offensive than the word itself.

By the way, "Hip Chicks do Wine" is a very popular wine store up in Portland. Owned by women. Hip. Nobody is offended by the word "chick" when they drive by their sign.

women as weak, shrinking violets who are ready to pass out at the use of a meaningless word. I will NOT give that kind of power of anyone, and I wish those who are constantly in a state of outrage over words would make it clear, they speak for themselves only and not for a majority of women who have more important things to worry about.

While I haven't used the word chick to describe a woman in a while, mainly because I never really did. But who the fuck cares if a woman is referred to as a chick. It used to be a compliment, it used to be applied to only pretty women....wtf is wrong with that? I mean shit DU, there are a lot of other things to get all offended and high and mighty about other than someone calling a woman a chick. Get over it. There are plenty of derogatory words for women and people in general, chick isn't one of them.

Thank you LancetChick for not being so uppity and easily offended.

rights, but the word 'chick' is the very least of my concerns. Women, contrary to the impression people might get here from a few people, are extremely strong people and are not, and I find it insulting as a woman to keep pushing this impression, the weak, shrinking violets those who constantly try to paint them that way with this nonsensical focus on trivia. I rarely see them speak about the real problems women are facing around the world though.

How do you feel about "female"? That defines a persons sex also.

And then there are our first names. Most of us have gender identifiable first names. You know like Nancy, Betty, Mary, Michelle, Joyce...
Or for the men, George, Leroy, Clarance, Warren, David...
Are these names being sexist also?

Its nbd here in NY (we have it down to a fucking science) but I had to really watch it when I lived in California. People's jaws dropped! After a while colleagues would just say to anyone unfamiliar with my colorful language "she's from NY" and people would laugh and say "oh, okay".

That's not an equivalent, I know, but I was pointing out my "meh" attitude about words for the most part.
