Do You Not Speak English?
Trump Former Aide Sebastian Gorka Tears Strip Off BBC Journalist
by Caroline Frost
Deadline, August 5, 2023
Donald Trumps former aid Sebastian Gorka gave short shrift to the BBCs political editor this week, eventually asking him, Do you not speak English?
In an increasingly terse exchange during the BBCs flagship early morning current affairs Today Programme on radio, Gorka accused the BBCs Chris Mason of putting words in his mouth and not listening to what he had said.
Gorka, who worked for Donald Trump in the White House between January and August of 2017, was defending his former boss following charges against Trump of attempting to overturn the 2020 US election. After Mason suggested that no one should be above the law, Gorka grew more agitated.
Why are you putting words in my mouth? Im talking about the absolute opposite. Do you not speak English? Im talking about equality before the law. Did you not listen to what I said? President Trump hasnt committed a crime, he said.
I want equality before the law. Why dont you, is it because you work for the BBC? We dont have the opportunity for a fair trial. You need to do a little bit of homework.

Sebastian Gorkas PhD adviser:
I would not call him an expert in terrorism
By Curt Devine, Drew Griffin and Scott Bronstein
CNN Investigates, August 18, 2017
EXCERPT...
Gorka, a British-accented tough-talker who until Friday served under now-fired White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, considers himself an expert on the topic.
But that opinion is not shared by a dozen international security experts and scholars interviewed by CNN, including a professor who advised Gorka on his PhD dissertation and considers him a friend.
I would not call him an expert on terrorism, said Stephen Sloan, a retired professor of political science who spent much of his career at the University of Oklahoma. Though he said Gorka is knowledgeable about terrorism matters, his level of expertise does not match the level where he stands in the White House.
Sloan said Gorka does a very good job being the bulldog, if you will, for the administration but as an adviser, I have some discomfort.
Its Gorkas ability to do battle with journalists, sources say, that has kept him in good standing with the President and out in front of the cameras. But beyond being a spokesman on national security matters, his duties at the White House remain unclear.

Brett Kavanaugh Raises Ethics Concerns After Attending Holiday Party With Ex-Trump Officials, Hard Righters
By Ken Meyer
Mediate, December 13, 2022
Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaughs judicial ethics came under scrutiny after it was reported that he attended a holiday party with former Donald Trump officials and numerous other prominent right-wing operatives.
Politico Playbook reported on a Christmas party held on Friday at the home of American Conservative Union leader Matt Schlapp and his wife, Trump White House Director of Strategic Communications Mercedes Schlapp. Kavanaugh was at the top of the guest list, among several other prominent names flagged by Politico.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Ginger Gaetz, Sean Spicer, Alex Acosta, Sebastian Gorka, Stephen and Katie Miller, Chad Wolf, Greta Van Susteren and John Coale, Laura Schlapp and Bryan Wells, Brendan Carr, Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY), Erin and Nick Perrine, Erik Prince, Ziad Ojakli, Peter Davidson, Steve Holland and Ben Terris.
Bloomberg noted that Kavanaughs attendance lends to concerns about his involvement in partisan activities, especially when the trust in the Supreme Court has been in a continuous decline, according to recent polls. Supreme Court justices are frequently critiqued for attending functions that coincide with their political views.

He remains a guest instructor at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, at Fort Bragg, the home of the Green Berets.

It doesn't even make for "good" television because he's so fucking predictable.
As a Brit passingly familiar with US politics, it drives me crazy. If the object is to portray US politics as largely bonkers, mission accomplished. It's not "balance", which would be the probable excuse. I suppose these freaks tend to be a bit more colourful and even more floridly deranged than some of our own native nutjobs.
The BBC and other UK TV channels have also tended to go for the likes of John Bolton as a spoke with unseemly regularity over the years (though nowadays he's one of the saner US pundits they have on, grading on an enormous curve).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001p7jt
And they started (about 2h12m) with a former Federal prosecutor before Gorka's rant.
The trouble is: who are the sane people on Trump's side?
Emrys
(9,097 posts)For us in the UK, it confirmed that Trump's core support - indeed, his bevy of spokespeople - are revolting, certifiably bonkers and will say anything, and in the end have nothing other than frothing bollocks. I think we'd already grasped that.
For Gorka and his Klan, what did this interview achieve? It's not geared to an American audience - if he speaks for anyone, it's the already terminally irredemiable - and I doubt his rote performance gained any converts outside the USA. I expect he got some sort of glow because he got to stick it to and speak "truth" to the Brits. That's his world. We don't have to co-inhabit it. Especially now, when he has no influence nor credibility, if he ever had any.
Meanwhile, there are a large number of developments on the current US scene that would be far more illuminating to cover, and might offer insights into the UK's own internal struggles.
That's just one reason I don't rely on the UK MSM for my coverage of any international affairs, let alone US ones. Hell, I hardly rely on it for domestic coverage! We know the BBC has been taken over by the UK government thanks to its many placepeople. It should have freer rein over its news coverage of what's happening in the rest of the world, so I see no excuse. This is what passes for "news" from what was once a respected outlet.
I pay for it. It sucks.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,153 posts)The question was how to cover it. Gorka had about 2 minutes, so it's not like it hugely distracted from other things in a 3 hour news programme. It was, as you said earlier, there for "balance". I don't think Mason gave in to him, or gave him an easy ride. Whether all Today listeners assume they'll get bonkers, frothing bollocks from those supporting Trump, I don't know (I did - I turned off when they said Gorka was about to start - but some might still have thought "we have to listen to the pro-Trump side" ).
I don't see the interview as a problem, if the BBC still has to make a show at "balance". Which it does, and which the pro-Trump loons like Farage would no doubt complain about if no-one pro-Trump ever appeared.
Emrys
(9,097 posts)It's not "Chris Mason stands up to/rebuts/marmalizes/destroys [insert DU standard hyperbole here to taste] Sebastian Gorka in all-too-predictable incendiary interview". It is what it is. Sebastian Gorka "Tears Strip Off BBC Journalist".
I doubt a significant proportion of the BBC's listenership at that hour of the morning recalled who Gorka is and anything about his "colourful" background, largely because he's rabid but insignificant in the UK (and not much more significant in the USA), as are his views, which we've been hearing ad nauseam for years on the UK airwaves, accompanied by almost identical repetitive headlines about his obnoxious behaviour when interviewed.
You don't "balance" anything by engaging with Gorka and affording him the credibility of ranking alongside even the likes of Joe Walsh, let alone a former federal prosecutor, because he's way out on the fringe.
I didn't hear Mason's intro to the interview, but unless it ran along the lines of "And now we're going to hear from Sebastian Gorka, and here I'll quote from Wikipedia, 'Various national security scholars in academic and policymaking circles have characterized Gorka as fringe. Some critics have challenged his academic credentials, his views on Islam and radicalization, and his motives for identifying with the Order of Vitéz and supporting Magyar Gárda, an organization banned by the European Union. ... In 1998, Gorka served as an adviser to Viktor Orbán. ... From 2014 to 2016, Gorka was an editor for national security affairs for Breitbart News, where he worked for Steve Bannon' - listeners may have heard of Bannon - 'In April 2021, Gorka was permanently banned from YouTube for repeatedly violating the company's policy on spreading misinformation related to the 2020 presidential election.' And here he is, apparently the best that Donald Trump's campaign can field to us as a spokesperson, and the most enlightening figure we can find at this point to set out the Trump campaign's stances, take it away, Sebastian," I'm left somewhat unimpressed by the BBC's attempt at "balance".
muriel_volestrangler
(106,153 posts)and irrelevant. I don't think Gorka gets credibility with anyone but Trump fanatics with an appearance like this. And I think he did Trump's side more damage, in the UK, than if they had found someone who was able to control themselves and put the talking points over in a measured fashion. So I don't regret the BBC getting him.
Kid Berwyn
(24,291 posts)Bannon is Trump's brain. Trump's biggest beneficiaries want a worldwide fascist internationale. To do that, he needs people who speak a language other than English. From what I understand, the British born Gorka was raised in a home where they spoke several languages. Weird how instead of discovering the wonders of the world, he focused his energies on making it look like he knows how to kill communists while getting rich at the same time.
Gorka is Bannon's brain. Bannon isn't just a dried-out drunk, he's an angry, bitter and divorced ugly, ugly human being. His best days and ideas are way behind him and he knows it. To fill the vacuum for fresh ways of feeding the "mind" of speechwriter and fellow fascist Steven Miller would tire even a 27-year-old Caitlyn Jenner. So, the nazis use their loot to hire who they can, a really angry guy who's well-versed at reading, but knows little about reality. Shouting his lines like in the worst traditions London stage with an "educated English" accent, he's perfect for disseminating the Big Lie that Trump is strong.
Job #1 is make a shit volcano of fascism seem "strong." What makes me sad is it's so effective.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,153 posts)... seeing a rich and vibrant democracy, with a legal system that is willing to challenge anyone ..."
and Gorka claimed that was "putting words in my mouth". Which really shows that it's Gorka who has problems speaking English. Yes, it was the opposite of what Gorka had claimed. That's the point - the interviewer was putting the opposing side to Gorka.
Oh, and to save everyone have to listen to Gorka's words, he went on to call Washington DC a "stinking hellhole" - apparently on the grounds that over 90% of its vote went to Clinton and Biden against Trump.

(24,291 posts)Rather than answering a question or making a point, the interlocuter redirects attention to a side issue of their choice, giving full credit for their libel or smear to me, of course.
Mr. Gorka is not interested in even acknowledging what the BBC interviewer observed: the USA is the Light of the World. The disgraced, goateed- and once-taxpayer paid nazi wants to use his airtime with the BBC as an opportunity to make hay. That means spreading the Big Like that his Boss trump is not the deranged moron the record has proven him to be, but strong like bull.
Mentioning how the cult's leader is always the victim of the courts, media, mean Democrats also helps his side enlist more nazis. Like the grand strategist he is at the drive through, Gorka knows more hands on deck mean more hands to ask for money with which to generate chaos.
When he calls DC a "stinking hellhole'" he's talking African Americans. Dimdonnie and the rat bastards consider Detroit and America's great cities "hellholes" in order to blame Trickle Down Economic's failures on the under-funded New Deal. The good people living in the nation's urban areas also serve as handy targets for blaming election fraud. Wait until the Atlanta indictments come down. Trump won't know what hit him.
Gorka is no anti-commie. He is an agent for Putin.

(106,153 posts)As the Jan 6th report put it:
were going to walk down, were going to walk down, he said to the crowd.
[W]ere going to walk down to the Capitol, and were going to cheer on
our brave senators and congressmen and women, and were probably not
going to be cheering so much for some of them. 63
President Trump used the phrase scripted for him by his White House
speechwriters, peacefully and patriotically once, about 20 minutes into
his speech.64 Then he spent the next 50-or-so minutes amping up his
crowd with lies about the election, attacking his own Vice President and
Republican Members of Congress, and exhorting the crowd to fight. And
we fight. We fight like hell the President said to a crowd that had already
spent the day chanting, Fight for Trump! Fight for Trump!, and that
would keep up the chorus when storming the Capitol.65
Finally, he told the crowd where to go to take back our country: So
were going to, were going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue. I love
Pennsylvania Avenue. And were going to the Capitol, and were going to try
and give . . . were going to try and give our Republicans, the weak ones
because the strong ones dont need any of our help. Were going to try and
give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our
country. So lets walk down Pennsylvania Avenue. 6"

The context was:
I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.
After that, it's a tedious retelling of all the claims that had already been rejected by the courts. He suggests forgetting the Constitution and "the rules":

"As the term banana republic has evolved in the last century, it is no longer limited to countries in Central America or the tropics. Key characteristics of a banana republic in the modern world include:
widespread government corruption - yes, during Trump's term
tyrannical government - yes, during Trump's term
unstable government - not especially
civil unrest - yes, by Trump's minions
coup attempts/insurgency - yes, by Trump's minions
economic dependency on exporting a limited natural resource (which may or may not be bananas) - nope
infrastructure owned/supported by out-of-country interests - nope
overall economic dependency on foreign investment or business entities - yeah, like Trump selling his condos to Russians and other foreign adversaries
widespread poverty - yes, but only the Democrats want to do anything about it
enormous gap between the ruling class and the working class (no middle class)" - yes, but only the Democrats want to do anything about it

My step-siblings have told me that a foreign company was a major player in funding and running the toll road from near San Antonio all the way up to Dallas (?) it was a Spanish corporation. I seem to recall a controversy when I was down there about how much of the tolls they were raking in for themselves, and how little they were giving to the state of Texas.
I was only there on vacation, though, so I got only bits and pieces of the story.
