Biden is putting his name on economic progress, but will voters just drive right by?

The Montgomery Locks and Dam near Pittsburgh is in the midst of a $857 million upgrade to ensure water levels in the Upper Ohio River are high enough for large cargo ships to pass through.
On a grassy roadside nearby, a white sign announces whos behind the work: Project funded by President Joe Bidens Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
For Biden, taking credit for an improving economy including the jobs and growth made possible by the trillion-dollar public works law has become a political imperative, one that will help determine whether he is reelected to a second term next year. Even as Democrats relish a recent hot streak of positive economic data, they acknowledge it wont benefit Biden politically unless voters begin to associate him with the improvements.
The White House office responsible for the infrastructure signage says there will be hundreds of thousands of signs claiming credit for projects made possible by the 2021 law, many of which are just now getting started. The same sign is posted near a road improvement project in Wisconsin and a border crossing in Arizona. Even where the work isnt obvious, there are signs. At a large empty field in Montana, a sign announces a Superfund site is being cleaned up thanks to the law. ...........................

(2,120 posts)The Agriculture Department last week began mandating that millions of boxes of surplus food for needy families include a letter from President Donald Trump claiming credit for the program.
The USDAs $4 billion Farmers to Families Food Box Program has distributed more than 100 million boxes to those in need since May, with the aim of redirecting meat, dairy and produce that might normally go to restaurants and other food-service businesses. But organizations handing out the aid complain the program is now being used to bolster Trumps image a month before a high-stakes election and some even have refused to distribute them.
In my 30 years of doing this work, Ive never seen something this egregious, said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Food Banks. These are federally purchased boxes.
...
The move is the latest example of Trump using the levers of government and taxpayer dollars for self-promotion as he runs for re-election. In the early months of the crisis, the president enclosed letters with his signature to millions of Americans getting stimulus money stemming from a congressional aid package and made sure his name was printed on the checks. His health department is now rushing to push out a $300 million taxpayer-funded ad campaign promoting the administrations coronavirus response.

(9,009 posts)The unprecedented decision to add Trumps name to the checks as he was running for re-election generated significant criticism. Some critics considered it a branding tactic no different than what Trump had done with his hotels and golf courses. But as ABC News reported, there were also significant concerns that the process of adding Trumps name would delay the distribution of checks to millions of Americans, many of whom had recently become unemployed as a result of the pandemic.

(3,833 posts). . . there are folks still on dial-up internet service. A few areas have fiber optic with broadband.
As soon as the infrastructure money was released, crews showed up running fiber down every road in the county, putting connection drops are every driveway. By the end of this year every residence and building in the county will have fiber within 100 feet except for a few with long driveways. The company providing broadband service already is being overrun with installation orders.
Then, our Republican Congressman Rob Wittman -- who voted against the infrastructure bill -- showed up in his hard hat and safety yellow vest taking credit for everything.
We need several of those signs.

But I live in a sane district with an awesome D rep. So when he shows up for things like that, I try to drop by to cheer him on.

The DNC can fund these signs so the Repugs won't be able to say, "He's using taxpayer money for political purposes."

(9,459 posts)The bill passed in August 2021.
And two YEARS, almost to the damn day, they are getting around to doing this?
Why is this so late?
This is the kind of political nucleotides that should be part of the political DNA of every Democratic member of a legislative body.
Its so BASIC it should have been in the planning BEFORE the proposed bill was even submitted, and executed the moment the bill passed.
Why is this so late? Because Democrats are tired of all the Republicans taking credit for a bill they voted against?
No. Bad basic politicking.
ExWhoDoesntCare
(4,741 posts)Do you realize that it takes time to apply for the bill's money, have it approved, get permits fully cleared and other legalities straightened out before these projects can get started?
No?
Well, now you do.
Sheesh.
Grins
(9,459 posts)Actually - I do.
I live in DC and have been involved in government contracting and major program for 35-years. I'm very familiar with the budget process. It can move amazingly fast given the will and direction.
All of this should have been budgeted and blocked in the bill BEFORE the damn bill was even signed!
The bill was proposed in March 2021, introduced in the House in early June, and signed into law 15-weeks later in November. Warrants for the spending were at the Treasury 30-days later, and ready to go in either December or January 2022 (at the latest.)
In early Feb 2022 the first Republican took credit with his constituents for the bill he voted against. Many more followed.
It is now 21-months since the bill was signed. And just now they are PLANNING to come out with how to promote it? Political malpractice.

(58,785 posts)I regret the ignorance and low level of general involvement, though, that makes it desirable to ignore that congressional Democrats ran on and worked for years to create and pass the infrastructure bills President Biden signed. (And 80M Democrats voted for. )
KISS is a pathetic necessity for what is supposed to be an educated, empowered, at least minimally engage populace.

(389 posts)about this for a long time. In Ohio, every time a big project starts, there will be a sign with the governor's name on it. If it's a big project, the governor will be there. Biden should have officials from the appropriate department at every groundbreaking across the nation, and available to the press. And make the sign bigger!
