He continued describing Paula Broadwell:
"She is an extremely good looking woman. She is a marathon runner. She runs Iron Man triathlons. So she's out running with him and writing a biography."
"I think the term is 'propinquity.'"<<

(110,159 posts)what about the women? are they just wired for it? cause men sure do not like or accept that idea. but, women are suppose to accept men are just wired.
one contradiction, never answered.
second.
men are wired.
yet, only a small minority cheat. and almost all those people whose parents cheated. but, only a minority.
if men are wired, why do the vast majority not cheat. they are men, wired, and dont cheat.
it is all around bullshit that men (even men not cheating) embrace cause it feeds the all powerful, every present, godlike awesome male sexuality. feels good for a man. to see his sexuality just so damn incredible. even if they do not cheat.

(1,569 posts)I do believe the majority of people do maintain their vows, but I'm always leery of self-reported percentage studies for "illicit" behaviors. As I've posted before, there has been and continues to be a double standard between men and women that makes it somewhat more difficult for women to admit to infidelity.
People do lie, and when they have (or feel they have) more to lose, they are more likely to lie. My guess is that percentages of women who have cheated is probably about the same as men and both are likely in the 25% area. We'll never really know because many people are in total denial that what they did was actually cheating, and some will just never tell the truth.
It also isn't clear from the studies if "cheating" is strictly breaking your personal vows, or if it includes being the "other woman" or "other man". Also, is it "cheating" if you're in an open/swinger relationship?
I actually don't think it matters what percentages are. What really matters are the expectations and responsibilities that partners agree on and how those understandings relate into trust and respect for each other. I've been in and witnessed some truly horrible relationships that didn't have fidelity issues and known "cheaters" that had strong relationships. It is a much more complicated world and people vary much more than we generally admit to ourselves.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)and i am not gonna go hunting them. not an easy thing for me to do. but, i found it interesting and made sense. that is why they say women are above 16% and men are 21%.
they can get a consistent number on that for men. it is much easier for them to say that, ya they cheated, or not. not so easy for women. this has been found to be one area where women lie. and lie often, lol. all about the lying. and the couple of last studies i read on this does put women about even with men, and one said it is probably higher for women than men. but it is also the reason you state. a man is a stud for the fuck and a woman is a slut for the fuck. meh...
and really, i do not much care about all this. my point, and why i am continually putting this out. i too believed it was much higher. years of living and listening to men be outraged at the accusation of a cheater, the label, their pride in being faithful to wife, their wanting to be heard, their hurt of being thought otherwise, gave me pause. and i actually did research on it.
when it behooves a man, he wants to be all about the "think with his dick". when that stroke of the ego is not needed then you hear men proudly and stridently claim, they do not cheat, would not cheat, no interest in cheating.
i thought that should be honored. and thru research, i found that what i was hearing from men was more correct than not.
so the least we can do is not create a more worse of who we are, than what we actually are.

(10,624 posts)And it goes both ways. These men aren't having all these affairs with each other.

(82,383 posts)Right wingers or conservatives. I don't agree with double standards, but the right wing will tell you happily all about them. Women are not "hard wired" to do things like cheat. In fact we are the ones who make the home and have the babies and that's why we prefer older and stable men (according to this double standard rule) while men want to do as many women as possible to "spread their seed" or such other BS. Which makes it a mystery why they aren't for polygamy. But leave it to conservatives not to make sense.
So that is why a conservative is the one feeling sorry for poor General P. He's hard wired to want other women, what can the poor guy do? Of course he overlooked that she was hard wired to stay home tending to her children, but conservatives overlook that or just rule that particular woman evil.
dawg
(10,624 posts)much less "spreading their seed".
They are about the affirmation of being wanted by someone other than their long-suffering spouse. It is the ego rush and not the sexual rush that is the main reason most people cheat.
And since most people who rise to high-level positions like generals and politicians tend to be narcissists, it should come as no surprise that this happens as often as it does.

(8,646 posts)You make the decision that cheating is not an option, and then follow through. Not hard, IMO. If you cheat, it's a choice you were WILLING to go with, so you must be prepared to accept the consequences, the end. And agree 100% with your last sentence.
I kind of equate it with the decision I made not to spank my kids. I have friends who say things like, "well, I wasn't going to spank my kids but sometimes I just get so mad I can't help myself!" WTF? I made the decision NOT TO spank, ever, and you know what? Once you decide it's not an option, it's pretty easy not to spank. To say otherwise means you excuse those people who beat and abuse their kids because they were 'just so angry and full of rage' they couldn't help themselves.

It doesn't excuse what he has done, but that is on him and his family.
The only ones I take exceptions with in that regards are those that are hypocritical about it like Newt who went after Clinton for his personal indiscretions. Otherwise, I could care less, and just look at how well they perform in the job that they have.
I will consider such an impropriety as their own mistake and personal failing apart from the job that they are doing. I am willing to give them their privacy and that is about all I am going to say about that.

I just recently saw on Craigslist an ad by a woman looking for a "friend with benefits" in order to cheat on her husband.
In fact this UK study showed that not only do women cheat nearly as much as men, but women are far better at lying about it. The study even shows an alarming percentage of men are actually unknowingly raising a child that is not biologically theirs!
