Is getting kicked out. Did they make all the right decisions? no. Do any of us? They have two older dogs and I can maybe help with that. There are dog sanctuaries out there that will take in older dogs and take care of them. I can at least email them to see if they can help.
There are no human sanctuaries out there.
They are on disability and have applied for all government help and have not gotten any, so no need to give us guidance for any of that. They opened a go fund me and that didnt work either (gave as much as I could to that). He has 5 days left at his house.
But,
There are no human sanctuaries out there.
And that says a lot about us.

sage
I'm sure he would appreciate any help.
I knew him as a guitarist in the Va Beach and Norfolk area. I know he used to teach a lot, used to come to my open mic nights and play. Very good technically but wasn't my style, more Malsteem than southern blues rock or bluegrass like I am, but still a really good player and knew his theory. He used to be married but I dont know how he ended up out west by himself. Was always a good guy. That's all I got.

(19,745 posts)I didnt see your original go fund me post. Are you up for doing another OP?
Eko
(9,993 posts)But that would be two days in a row I have asked DU to help and I feel bad about it. Yesterday I did an op to help the Asher house, a dog sanctuary that is experiencing a crazy dog flu. Plenty of people helped out on that and I am so proud of DU. That being said I don't want to be the dude asking help from all of you that much.

(19,745 posts)Maybe others missed it also. I dont think anyone on DU would have an issue with someone posting calls for assistance. Those that can help do and others K&R for visibility

(8,582 posts)I guess the honest truth is that we humans often find animals to be better companions/friends than humans, so animals are often adoptable, whereas humans....well....
But your point is valid. This is where a strong, functional society would have in place readily accessible government provided resources for such non-adoptable humans.
That we don't says what kind of society we are.

(9,993 posts)Have rescues go to pounds and rescue older humans. Make it funny, then at the end show what really happens. Maybe that would change something in us, maybe it would just be a funny video to others.
Just a thought.

(26,856 posts)...to situations like this. And not the situations of scary stories you hear about shelters.
Occasionally I've seen interesting FB articles on small semi-temporary housing unit for a single person set up in different countries.
---------------------------------------
But as to
I just wonder sometimes what kind ?nasty people (a general) you keep running into your (depending) neighborhood, small town, school, workplace etc that make you feel this way?
Can it sometimes be an aspect of serious Introvertism? I have only had one genuinely Introvert friend over the past 15+ yrs (I'm 70 ). Learned what it can be like for her (plenty of articles she's sent me! ). I'm an ambivert, but more on the extrovert side. Pandemic lockdown became more difficult each warm weather return as I really missed the energy of being out on the streets of NYC! (not a crushing crowd, though 😯 )
Can it be the interests, and possibly personality aspects that may not -fit- in a certain area?
I have had a few different nasty types of interpersonal experiences. Snobby girl clique in 4th - 6th grade, but also Artistically talented like myself.
An -incompetent- roommate who still was bringing home strange men to help her with the getting the building, and apt door open. A roommate who turned verbally, and physically abusive while I struggled to get out of there after it didn't stop, and got worse (it's complex).Only if I showed up with bruuses, or serious cuts could something be done
So I've experienced nasty, and (while not the worst) real nasty & scary!
Usually my experiences with people are nuetral to quite friendly. I have a range of shorter, medium, long, and very long friendships. Along with a bunch of people between long good acquaintences to friendships. And still making new acquaintences that sone might turn into friendships as I somewhat reccently moved.
I really hope these thoughts, questions, hypothesises haven't offended anyone (not my intention! ). I wouldn't be considered a typical "average" person either in certain positive, and probably a bit negative in a couple of ways. Wouldn't hold myself as a paragon of virture. Do my best to be thoughtful, considerate, kind, as I was taught. Playful, and funny.

(8,582 posts)That said, I generally like most people I personally deal with irl. My comment was a reflection of "society at large" as depicted on the internet.
However, my extreme introversion means I don't have (or apparently, need) very many close relationships. So, when everything is kept mostly casual, then people are ok for me. But I am a voracious reader, so I know there's plenty out there that does not match my personal experience. Thus my comment about human nature.

(21,883 posts)She had applied and been turned down twice, and finally got a 3rd hearing. Her lawyer told her that it usually went through the 3rd time. They don't know why, they are always turned down on the first try, and quite often on the 2nd. And a lot of people give up at that point. If you go for the 3rd time, it is quite often approved. Sure enough, she was approved on the 3rd try. Unfortunately, she passed away about a week after she had been approved. This was all in the last few weeks, so I'm still in shock, as is her mom. She has talked to Social Security and they will give her the social security in arrears, not sure if it is from the first time she applied, haven't heard the whole story yet. But her mom was supporting her, and she lives with me too. I'm happy she will be getting some of the money back that she used (her retirement money) supporting her daughter. But don't give up on the disability yet.

(1,445 posts)since many places require $ or can be full but hope they are able to be saved together. Senior dogs are grand and very little trouble.
I know of 2 people in 2 different States who both recently got into housing that cost them less than $400/mo. One has a cat. Sometimes some places can work with pets. Not always but some. He pays too much for also having a disability. What State is this?
Eko
(9,993 posts)I have no idea why he moved away from all the people that I would think could support them, and to why an area with that high of rent. I would think that they made some bad decisions, but I don't have all the information as I said. Feel free to email them, if the go fund me doesnt allow that I can provide the facebook link as well.
Thanks,

(2,054 posts)Every state receives federal dollars for CIL's. They advocate for people with disabilities, as well as, share information. Some may also manage Medicaid waiver money for ppl with disabilities. I worked at one in Nebraska for 10 years. They do good work if the management is good.

(7,694 posts)I am so sorry for the problems of your friend but I clearly understand.
I am 81, disabled, and homebound. My everyday world is wrapped around my phone, tv, and laptop in order to stay connected to the outside world. I have social security
but, believe me, living on social security is a day-to-day struggle.
Like the person in your post, I have applied, applied, and applied for government assistance but been turned down time and time again because my social security is from $100-$200 over the limit for any kind of aid.
Recently my state gave tax refunds to the taxpayers. They also had a program for people like me who don't make enough money to pay taxes so I applied. I was thrilled to be a recipient of $500 that I was going to use to help me pay for propane over the winter. A hacker stole my money from my debit card. The card company and their asshat bank have stonewalled me and have been no help in getting my money back. In desperation I started a GoFundMe account and posted it on my neighborhood website.....which was a big mistake, I got called a scammer and a thief and my address was posted on the site. Some people harassed me every day.
Not all people are turds. One very kind gentleman filled my propane tank. And a wonderful lady gave me a lead for help. I have a case worker coming within the next week to visit with me and access my needs. Hopefully I can get some help as it is very difficult for me to get around to make meals or do the laundry.
I have dear neighbors, a husband and wife, who do my running for me. They pick up groceries and my mail for me and stop to visit because they know I get lonely. So among the asshats in the world, there are some really wonderful people.

(9,993 posts)His disability was only $1200 a month. Rent $800 and utilities about 2-3 hundred a month. Rest was used for food. Made too much for medicare and medicaid and was a diabetic. Died from not having insulin cause he couldn't afford it. The state killed my Dad, for politics.

(9,993 posts)$35 bucks now. I could have afforded that for him. $35 bucks. Back then it was over $300 for a month and I could barely make my rent. Of course he didn't tell me that he wasn't getting it but $35 a month and he would have.
Virginia killed my Dad. State where I was born. Ill never be a Virginain.

(9,605 posts)American poverty is the result of maldistribution of wealth and income. Much is made of the lack of sufficiently progressive taxation. Little discussed is the nature of our lopsided distribution of income. Income is earned by meritorious preparation and effort up to a point. Beyond that point, each additional dollar of income is attributable in decreasing proportion to merit (earned) and in increasing proportion to power. There comes a further point at which every additional dollar of income can be fairly described as looting.
If it all ends badly, we should not be surprised if some observers are heard cheering.

(6,680 posts)The Way America Treats Its Elderly Is Unconscionable
The Crisis America Doesnt Talk About, And Its Warning for the World
By now, Americas famous for million-dollar medical bills. Everyone Canadians, Europeans, Asians knows about it and shudders. It took a decade or more for that to really sink in around the world. It wasnt so long ago Id tell people that yes, really, just going to the hospital for a routine procedure in America can bankrupt you and theyd be incredulous. I raise that because the same thing is going to happen with elderly care. Our societies are now aging, and there are a few paths before us. One of those is the American one. Indifference and neglect.
...It should be said that this lack of any form of elderly care, at an institutional or systemic level, is a consequence. Of the American right wings Great Experiment. What would a truly Nietzschean society look like? In which life was a brutal competition? For basic resources, like money, food, water, shelter? Repeated every day? So that only the strong survived and the weak perished? A place with no safety nets, supports, levers, nothing, of any kind, a pure void, in which to breed pure conflict?
Well, one of the consequences of all this small government, better called nihilism is that you abandon the weak, ie the vulnerable. But the vulnerable whos that? Its the young. The ill. The poor. The elderly. Now, those arent different social groups, really. Thats all of us, at different life stages. Were all young at one time, sick at another, old at another, and probably poor for a stretch in between. Were all vulnerable at different stages in our lives, and so designing a society like this a pure void, meant to breed ultimate conflict, and wipe out the weak LOL, its a foolish idea...My heart. I can think of little more terrifying than this, my friends. To be elderly, frail, and abandoned. To have been a decent and honorable and hard-working person your whole life and then, suddenly, youre disposable. Not treated like a human being at all. Degraded, exploited, to the last and then thrown away. What a shame it is that this this shocking neglect and indifference happens in America. What a shame, history will say. And it will be right.

(58,785 posts)Facilely throwing blame to an amorphous "they" and "them" is a way of failing to understand our own responsibility, that we ARE the "they."
WE, some 240 million of us eligible to vote, cumulatively create and empower, in a real sense ARE, "the establishment." Nothing happens that WE the People didn't choose or unfortunately allow.
Best wishes to this couple among the 240 million who could have done more in the past to have a better nation now.
On a happier note, we currently ARE doing better?! Because enough of us voted like serious, responsible people to do it.

(3,041 posts)It's a bunch of lists of places that help with everything you can think of - housing, food, etc. You just enter your zip code and select housing, for instance, and mine lists 108 different programs. I saw several that provide emergency financial assistance for rent.
Also known as Aunt Bertha.
Seems like there should be some help there. I hope so.
