…crazy enough to be up watching this.

They are certainly playing better than in group play.

Exciting game. Has felt a couple times like the US was on the verge.

They do it in hockey, as well. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Play until someone wins, or take a draw.

and scheduling an open-ended league system for big competitions wouldn't work. "Play until someone wins" would become a stamina test, not a football test (though I will note the one suggestion I've heard that might make it work - allow unlimited substitution and re-substitution during this final phase (possibly at pre-arranged 5 minute intervals, so the play isn't constantly interrupted. However, I think that would still be more and more a stamina test).

Penalties involve the basic soccer skills, and performing under pressure is a part of sport.

I was part of the administration for our community team ages ago and we lost more than a few games that way.
You hope it doesn’t reach there but it is what it is.

This was the weakest US team I have seen in a WC

…when they were 5, so I’ve watched lots of shootouts. I get such a knot in my stomach when I watch them, you’d think one of my kids was playing.

I was always glad neither of our kids wanted to play keeper.

3 PKs is a lot to miss.

Seems like you're not allowed to save twice ... or is VAR going to say it crossed the line before the 2nd?

Just shown the VAR replay - the 2nd save happened when the ball was just over the line.

Simple
Sweden wins. US had the better game but the Swedish keeper was the difference.

Truth be told neither of these teams was going to beat Japan this time around.

The US missed too many PKs. Neher blocked two and damn near a third PK.
