Petraeus Scandal: Paula Broadwell in Classified Document Probe
Paula Broadwell, the author who allegedly had an affair with former CIA Director David Petraeus, is suspected of storing significant amounts of military documents, including classified material, at her home, potentially in violation of federal law.
A source familiar with case told ABC News that Broadwell admitted to the FBI she took the documents from secure government buildings. The government demanded that they all be given back, and when federal agents descended on her North Carolina home on Monday night it was a pre-arranged meeting.

(14,139 posts)I assume she did not have a top-level security clearance. It seems the buildings were not that "secure" after all.

(4,359 posts)But.... i'm guessing the stuff at home has nothing to do with her job. The stuff at home is stuff she probably wanted to keep to use for her writing. VERY bad.

(146,324 posts)A very bad thing. She should not have even seen those documents, whatever they were.

(2,132 posts)That is just plain stupid. Everyone gets briefed about proper storage and handling of classified material when they join the military or get a civilian job that deals with classified stuff.
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE THE CLASSIED STUFF HOME!
What was she thinking??

(24,096 posts)so if it wasn't planted you think she just took the files herself or did Petraeus get them for her?

(4,533 posts)and she backed him up on him. Finding the classified files on her computer is what really, brought Peatraues into the investigation, the FBI wanted to know same question you were asking.
That information helped resolve concerns that there was a national-security breach, although the source of the documents hadn't been determined. The officials offered no specifics about what was in the documents.

(24,096 posts)what? if the source hasn't been determined then the security aspect is still in question.

And the pickup for them was pre-arranged.
Although the idea had occurred to me that she was being set up, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Stargazer09
(2,132 posts)I would be more inclined to believe that if the story had said that this was more of a raid than a planned hand-over of the material.
But yes, there is definitely a possibility that the stuff could have been planted.
She may have even offered to take the fall for her lover, too. It's been known to happen. Make it look like she was the evil spy, and the poor general just fell into her web.
What a tangled mess!

(9,894 posts)if there weren't many classified documents in many homes or people who have access to them. For all kinds of reasons. Documents have a way of turning up where they aren't "supposed" to be. It doesn't necessarily mean skull-duggery is afoot.

(24,096 posts)the media wants to feed us that bullshit, and unfortunately that's what most people want to hear of.
I wish the yappers on tv would give this story more serious thought.
Maddow last night pretty well said we shouldn't get too involved with the sex in this story, then went into Hoover shit. and we should leave Patraues and his picadillos alone.
so early in the story? and she wants to shut the book on it now?
what irresponsible ignorant tripe.
O'Donnell had a much healthier attitude on this: he never trusted Petraeus and talked about him and that Allen guy like they were the idiots they proved themselves to be.

but yes, this is not about the sex.

(39,316 posts)smear Obama? I tend to think she was looking for an angle to move up the totem pole, she wanted to be another Condi Rice. She was using the General and other contacts to do so.

(24,096 posts)and what Patraeus and the CIA were really up to in Libya with the prisoner story. This related to Obama (remember Petraeus is a Bush fuckface with big britches and ego to match) and somehow connects with that awkward presser Romney had when the story broke. He was so giggly and delighted.
Petraeus quit/got fired to distract from the real story. Paula and the twins and all the others are just peripheral entertainment for us.
I am hearing too much about what a lovely and wonderful and moral and exemplary man Patreus is (barf) from our great and esteemed media and the hairs on the soles of my feet are standing up.

(25,263 posts)versus any of the other details surrounding this scandal like breeching of security and classified documents, etc.
It looks like there is a concerted effort to put the lid on this or switch the emphasis to a sex scandal.
Something else is going on and we need to get to the bottom of this.
If there are partisan shenanigans going on behind the scenes one or the other party will ultimately show its hand by the way they handle this.
We must be vigilant and watch now how each party will deal with this and this will be a clue as to who is protecting who.

(17,055 posts)I can't figure out why the media is trying to sell this as a sex story. Oh yeah, the media knows sex sells but I'm not buying. If it were JUST about sex there would not be all these ongoing investigations.
