We're on Maui..
We have a Cat4 hurricane passing to the south of us.. high winds, no rain.. but the winds have wreaked havoc.. brush fires fanned by high winds are burning in Kula, Makawao, Kihei, Wailuku and a large section of Lahaina.. there is video of Front Street, Lahaina fully engulfed in flames.. people were running into the ocean to escape the smoke and flames.. the Coast Guard picked them up and took them to safety...
Fire Department is completely overwhelmed.. most of the roads are closed and shelters are open...
This is gonna suck big time...

(39,442 posts)I just spent 2 weeks on Maui in March and remarked how unusually green the West Maui Mountains looked around the pali 00 it's usually pretty yellow and dry. My friend and I stay in Napili (Napili Point condos) but spend a lot of time in Lahaina. I'm heartbroken. Please stay safe.

(23,860 posts)I had no idea things were so bad there. Seen nothing on the national news about it.
Sounds like you would have been better off if the hurricane hit you since the rain would stop the fires.

(23,860 posts)Who cares if Hawaii is burning. Drumpf and the MAGATS are REAL Americans. Lets talk about them!

(11,479 posts)I remember when Obama was criticized for spending vacations in Hawai'i instead of in the "real" America. Let's ask some folks at a diner or state fair in the Midwest what they think
BTW, the WaPo has the Hawai'i fire as one of its lead stories
