Remember back folks? We were having debates about what might happen on January 6th. I remember the largest crowd was in the camp of nothing will happen because counting the Electoral votes was just a formality, the votes were already certified, remember?
I was in the radical camp, I even suggested that Trump may invoke martial law. I was pretty much laughed at, it's OK, I understand, I was just a flunky who was trying to think like Trump, and actually, the legal minds here were correct, they were saying what should happen if the law was followed.
I remember the early days back in March of 2021, the time period after Merrick Garland was confirmed. I was surprised that 20 Magat Senators voted for his confirmation. As time passed I was again in the minority in thinking that DOJ was not investigating Trump and his inner circle, after all, DOJ doesn't leak. It turns out that DOJ did not investigate Trump or his inner circle for approximately a year and a half, there is no debate about that today.
Fast forward to today, what is the #1 issue today for Jack Smith? It is Time Matters. Jack Smith has done wonders in 8 months, he has caught up and has indicted Trump. Getting Trump to trial before the election is Jack Smith's #1 goal. Most of the early evidence was given to Smith by the J6 committee, thank you Speaker Pelosi.
Getting the stolen documents prosecution to trial pre-election is iffy with Trump puppet eh-Lean Cannon in charge.
I have a mountain of faith that Smith will get the J6 prosecution to trial pre-election with an impartial judge running the show.
I'm not a doom and gloomer now, I am 100% confident that Trump will be convicted by Jack Smith before the election.
The American people need to see what a traitor Trump is before they vote, dang I hope the trial is covered on TV.

But, it is always a gamble when you put Trump on TV.

(13,283 posts)martial law is very different from an insurrection. So your concern was not only radical, it never materialized, and I don't recall you being concerned about a mob charging the Capitol. Trump surely considered the former and decided against it because even he, along with the rest of us, didn't think, and rightfully so, that the army will support him, and that's why he chose the latter. There were debates on DU about what might happen before the elections and the inauguration, and January 6 was one of several dates discussed in this debate, but certainly not the only one and not the most significant one. It wasn't a debate about what might happen on January 6.
The oft repeated accusations of DOJ not investigating Trump, which is based in large part on a WP article widely derided for its shoddy journalism or outright fact-free speculations, is a fairy tale. All evidence suggests that the DOJ investigation into Trump has been ongoing since even before Garland took office (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/07/us/politics/justice-department-trump-capitol.html), and way before the J6 Committee came up with their criminal referrals in December of 2022. In March 2022, WP reported that "In the past two months, a federal grand jury in Washington has issued subpoena requests to some officials in former president Donald Trumps orbit who assisted in planning, funding and executing the Jan. 6 rally", eaning the subpoenas went out as early as January 2022. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/03/30/jan-6-fbi-subpoena-justice/). In April 2022, "Sources confirm to Reuters that the U.S. Justice Department was investigating Trump's removal of official presidential records from the White House." (https://www.voanews.com/a/timeline-of-the-trump-documents-inquiry-/6734453.html). In July 2022 DOJ was already investigating Trump himself (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/03/30/jan-6-fbi-subpoena-justice/), and has not ruled out charging him (https://www.businessinsider.com/merrick-garland-hasnt-ruled-out-charging-trump-over-january-6-2022-7). In May of 2022, DOJ subpoenas National Archives for Trump's classified docs. On August 8,2022, FBI raids Mar-a Lago for classified docs (https://www.voanews.com/a/timeline-of-the-trump-documents-inquiry-/6734453.html).
All of the above happened before Jack Smith took over the Trump part of the DOJ investigation, which was by then well on its way, and THIS is what is not debatable. All of the evidence collected by DOJ since 1/6, 2021 was given to Smith by DOJ.
So what is Jack Smith #1 concern today? Certainly not timing. It is, very predictably, successful prosecution of Trump. If Trump gets acquitted, timing means jack shit (pun not intended). If Trump gets elected before trial, time means jack shit. If Trumps gets elected after the trial, timing means jack shit. Jack Smith has no business timing any of it.
