Those of us who are old enough to remember the Watergate scandal, and really paid attention to it even after Ford pardoned Nixon, would remember that there were books and articles written which implicated all kinds of individuals who had not been mentioned in the official investigation in Washington and the surround. These included but were not limited to multinational corporations, Madams and call girls, influential lobbyists, and members of Congress, and private individuals.
Just because it is not been reported or you havent read about it does not mean that it does not exist. There are complexities and interwoven threads in every story, whether it has to do with the government, a business, or even us as individuals. Consider for a moment when you relate a story in which you may be somehow involved and you deliberately leave out certain elements for confidentiality or embarrassment , or for whatever reason. Now multiply that by the incredible complexity of a plot to overthrow the government of the United States and you can just imagine the omissions due to all kinds of rationales and reasons.
I believe that the threads of this plot have been untangled by the prosecutor, and there are going to be some remarkable revelations which will be a part of the indictments end of the trials. Of course, they will be unstated facts because certain people need to be protected, but I think that this is what these people like McCarthy, Barr, Jordan, Cruz, and the rest of the ilk know and participated in behind the scenes. We do not know what we do not know, but I can see the fear in the eyes of these people who are trying to rehabilitate themselves or act as though they are the aggressor in order to attempt to deflect guilt and/or blame.
Without discussing the matter specifically, I will tell you that I was privy to a extremely significant story of national proportions, because I was acquainted with three individuals who were participants and interestingly, none of them knew that I knew the other two. The stories they each told me confidentially were consistent, and were extremely revelatory and jaw-dropping. Their details were supported by the testimony of the other two individuals and I was able to put two and two and two together, and realized that virtually no one in the public sphere has ever been apprised of this aspect of this story. Two of the three people are deceased, and when the third person passes away, I might feel free to tell the tale . It would be of great interest to virtually everyone here. But my point is that there is so much going on of which we have absolutely no idea, no concept. It would not surprise me if Mr. Smith were to spring this type of revelatory umbrella over the whole mess ofolk. It may well be a game-changer.

(5,571 posts)I am completely convinced that Russia, China, and other enemies of our country have been doing everything they can to empower and grow the radical fringes of our political spectrum and increase discord. Both social media manipulation of useful idiots, and financially backing radical and unhinged politicians and media personalities.
I hope that if the Ukraine war causes Russia to collapse, that record of this campaign come to light.

(9,983 posts)If and when the entire story come to light it will outline the largest political conspiracy plot in American history. The plot is still ongoing, this cancer is going to take awhile to eradicate its infected the grass roots level.
Once out in the open and accepted by the majority of the voting populace this chapter in American history may well change how politics in this country is handled.

(2,784 posts)I realize that I am making a comment which is on a different subject than yours, but certain characteristics are the same. TFG's inane babble over the past eight years is something which all of us are familiar with. However, no history book fifty years from now will capture the breadth of his dysfunction, corruption and unworthiness to hold office. As you correctly point out, in any given situation of national importance, there are more material facts than the public realizes.

tRump loves social media and once you blather and threaten and lie on the internet, well, it is forever. I think many will produce work to drive home the insanity of this period and the orange oaf's own words will define the madness for future generations...like Hitler speeches but with less eloquence and dramaturgy. tRump rally videos make the point pretty well that we are witnessing a mad cult with a self-harming narcissist at the helm. Is that Trump, Fox News, and other far right sources, managed to turned the entire GOP into this ravaging, maniacal, bloodthirsty cult that has this crazy revenge and execution fetish. We may never know the true extent of the damage this insane cabal is doing to our country.

(19,726 posts)It's so damaging. When you hear Republicans contonue to entertain Trump's election lies it's harming our democracy. Every time you hear Republicans claim these prosecutions of Trump are political it's a blow to our democracy.
Democracies only work when there's a shared set of beliefs that support the idea that the voters have collective power. I know we ridicule them, but there is a good 25% of this country right now that doesn't believe we have a legitimate democracy anymore because of Republican lies. That's not good at all, those people are apt to do away with our system of government all together since they no longer belief it's democratic. It's an incredibly dangerous thing, and the GOP doesn't seem to be walking them back from the edge at all, quite the opposite actually.

People did not have to like it, but Americans did it, 44 times. It was one of the shinning city on the hill high points.
Trump violated this norm, willingly, wantonly, criminally, seditious-ly, refusing from the beginning to allow Biden transition team meetings.
Of course, by election day 2020, so damn many norms had been violated that all America was exhausted from treading the yellow waters released by the DAM trump.

(4,741 posts)During his first major speech about mob violence and political institutions:
"At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."
That was in 1838, 22 years before he became POTUS, but he had good reason to say it, from what he saw happening right in front of him.
Most Americans don't know how volatile the country's political situation was even before the Civil War. Some of the history of that time is flat-out nuts. Voting rights, even for white men, were a capricious mess. Interracial violence was a constant. Entire Presidential cabinets resigned for ridiculous reasons. Under Andrew Jackson, it was because the wives of cabinet members had ostracized the War Secretary's wife for being an uppity broad who was educated, and--the horror!--remarrying 'too soon' after her first husband's death.
Yes, that really happened. Bonus: His wife being the ring leader of the mean girls club destroyed the Presidential aspirations of John Calhoun, one of the most virulent racists ever elected to the Senate. Imagine how much worse this country would have become if he'd ever made it to the White House.
So thank you, Peggy Eaton, for being an uppity woman!
That's why Lincoln knew it was stupid internal stuff that would tear the country apart more than foreign actors.

(25,860 posts)that was unreported which is significant the way many things are significant, which almost nobody knows about. This website is filled with speculation, because we dont know all the details
of course we dont. Once in a while, somebody comes along here with inside info who can fill in the blanks and people go. Oh, now I understand. Thats all.
For example, I know things about each of the last eight or nine mayors race in Philadelphia, which went unreported. I know these things because I treated some of the chief fundraisers and politicians who were involved. No one on this site would care about this stuff so theres no point in discussing it here. I once reported here something I knew about Senator Santorums reelection, which caused quite a stir at the time. It involved the betrayal of the democratic party for insidious reasons by some of the people running the show. That was a very long time ago.

(497 posts)But I see it as the rich have taken over the Republican Party. They need a reliable base. Religious people want to have a society in a form they want. So the court pushes the religions agenda. The big payday comes with reducing taxes for the rich. Which the base votes for. Ultimately its the rich manipulating the courts for their own benefit. Thomas is an idiot if he thinks billionaires just want to be his friend.

Hillary knew all but couldn't say it. Smith knows all.
We can only speculate, but something was covered up by McConnell, Barr and the others you mentioned.
This giant conspiracy will read like a Russian Novel, because it is one.
And now that those "Putin Papers" are about to finally be revealed in court, I expect Donald "Kronsteen" Trump to have an accident.
He failed to destroy NATO, and we know the reward for failure.
I posted long ago (slightly edited since then)
1. The conservative movement took a hard swing right from its Limbaugh days of conservative issues and hate to pure hate and destruction. This coincides with the breakup of the Soviet Union. Anti-Soviet messaging ceased.
2. Russias economy is extremely oil-dependent. Oil interests control many legislators, and reap massive subsidies and favors.
3. Russia is an Orthodox Christian in name only, mostly white state. The church blesses nuclear warheads and Putin has declared his intention to expand his White Christian Nationalism.
4. Putin wants Ukraine. Arguably, that is the cause of his interference in the 2015 election to install an asset as president and weaken NATO, effectively delivering him Ukraine.
5. Bots spread lies and divisive messages to get Americans to fight one another.
6. A major news outlet repeatedly praises Putin, when theres nothing apparent to gain by doing so. On the surface, anyway.
7. Russia financed and infiltrated the NRA with the goal of replacing constitutional government with mob rule, and domestic terrorism.
Add Tuberville and all the other Putin Puppets, acting in unison ...
All you and I can do, and the best you and I can do is to Get Out the Vote 2024.
From an early post:
This is from the epilogue of "Stamped From the Beginning", by Ibram X Kendi.
Emphasis mine:
Protesting against racist power and succeeding can never be mistaken for seizing power. Any effective solution to eradicating American racism must involve Americans committed to antiracist policies seizing and maintaining power over institutions, neighborhoods, counties, states, nationsthe world. It makes no sense to sit back and put the future in the hands of people committed to racist policies, or people who regularly sail with the wind of self-interest, toward racism today, toward antiracism tomorrow. An antiracist America can only be guaranteed if principled antiracists are in power, and then antiracist policies become the law of the land, and then antiracist ideas become the common sense of the people, and then the antiracist common sense of the people holds those antiracist leaders and policies accountable.
And that day is sure to come. No power lasts forever. There will come a time when Americans will realize that the only thing wrong with Black people is that they think something is wrong with Black people. There will come a time when racist ideas will no longer obstruct us from seeing the complete and utter abnormality of racial disparities. There will come a time when we will love humanity, when we will gain the courage to fight for an equitable society for our beloved humanity, knowing , intelligently, that when we fight for humanity, we are fighting for ourselves. There will come a time. Maybe, just maybe, that time is now.

(4,741 posts)They're full on christian.
Do you think the Russian Orthodox church is the only one backing some horrible policies? Do you think they're the first to do it? Might want to read up on some history to know that it's nothing new for christians to support awful stuff--and through their official organizations.
I get rather tired of people acting like bad people don't exist in the christian religion, when they do.

(10,434 posts)I grew up Catholic and I think my Dad thought that the sun revolved around the earth. I don't remember, that being long ago. He certainly believed that heavy objects fall faster than light ones because it was in the Bible or the catechism. It's amazingly not in either. He was very mild-mannered except on really important theological points like this. But I have a big heart and forgive him.
As proof of my distrust of institutions, I became a big fan of Tom Lehrer, especially "Vatican Rag" Dad never knew about that.
Pardon me for going easy on them.
Thanks for the opportunity to express my dark and highly iconoclastic side.
