Nixon was a crook. He got a kick out of dirty tricks. He did not have the character to be the president of the United States. But, in the end, he put his country over his own criminal ambitions and resigned.
Trump is a crook. He would steal the nickels off the dead man's eyes. There was no rule or law he would not break, especially if it benefited him personally. He would lie to everyone about everything. He was a fake that thrived on his lies.
He was a much more dangerous president than Richard Nixon because he would not hesitate to sell the country out to our enemies, if there was a personal profit.
Trump is much worse than Nixon in every respect. There is no comparison of the two. Nixon was a statesman compared to Donald J Trump.

(9,709 posts)The biggest was starting the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, to clean up our air and water and protect endangered species.Republicans didn't always hate the planet.
Nixon also recognized the dangers that Russia (then Soviet Union) posed. And he opened up trade and tourism with China, which at the time was thought to be a good thing.
He was like Trump in one sense--willing to spy on his political opponents to try and subvert an election to benefit himself. He also was known to make anti-Semitic comments in private. So he was no saint. But his criminality was limited to covering up his knowledge of the Watergate breakin, as far as we know.
No president has ever been as purely evil, blatantly criminal on many fronts,or openly bullying to others as Trump.

(6,623 posts)It was a good political move by Nixon.
I'm tired of seeing people give him credit for it though.

(32,354 posts)...when we thought Nixon was the worst president this country would ever be burdened with? How we thought being driven from office in disgrace wasn't nearly enough punishment for him? How little we knew...

GOP under Nixon wasn't going to let him get away with his crimes.
GOP under Trump... well, we know that they have neither the integrity or the spine to stop his crime spree.

(26,606 posts)Trump is a moron. He doesn't know anything about anything. He's all bluster and no brains. Nixon had brains.

One is actively trying to start a civil war, the other did nothing to stop one.

(3,223 posts)...can be directed at the man in the mirror. Maybe it's too facile to blame the average American, but certainly our "leadership" is culpable for decades of inaction over Cointelpro, Iran-Contra, Iraqgate, CIA dope deals, Iraq War 2.0, KGB-style domestic spying, and the utter mismanagement of disasters like Hurricane Katrina and now Covid. That listing is by no means exhaustive; the corruption is continuous and seemingly never-ending.
If a few of the people responsible for these violations had actually done jail time, we might be in a better place than we are today.
