Defensively, they were excellent allowing a miniscule amount of goals per half in all matches.

But the propblem with soccer fundamentally is that if you cannot score in regular play, then it comes down to a skills competition between five(ish), depending on how many extra kicks, people who try to score goals on one team against the other team goalie. And on that day, kicks off target, a save that popped up just past the goal line, etc. and the US lost.

The nature of one and done tournaments like the NCAA basketball, NFL Playoffs. and World cup knockout stage is that the best team does not always win. It makes it more exciting, but there are upsets because of it.

(Which as an aside, a 1 vs 1 skills competition is a horrible way to decide a team sporting outcome).
