Somebody remind me. Is Ecuador a colony of the USA?

U.S. is sending FBI to Ecuador to help probe presidential candidate’s killing

The Biden administration is planning to send the Federal Bureau of Investigation to Ecuador to aid in the investigation into the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, according to people familiar with the plans.

The U.S. offered the assistance on Wednesday night after the shooting of Villavicencio in Quito, according to one of the people. Both asked not to be identified without permission to speak publicly.

The FBI didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. It’s relatively common for the FBI to assist in this type of investigation in countries that are U.S. allies.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/08/10/who-is-fernando-villavicencio-ecuador-death/

The death of Villavicencio, a vocal opponent of government corruption and drug trafficking groups, sparked outrage across the historically peaceful country, with President Guillermo Lasso saying early Thursday that the killing was “a political crime” that “will not go unpunished.”

Snip

Before his death, Villavicencio had spoken out about threats he had faced on the campaign trail.
On July 31, he told reporters that he and his campaign team had received a serious threat from the leader of a group linked to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel and, referring to detained crime boss José Adolfo Macías by his alias, “Fito,” said: “If I continue to refer to him and his structure, they would attack me or make an attempt on my life.”

But he was defiant, saying: “Here I am showing my face. I’m not scared of them.” Video from another campaign event, which was posted by his official account, showed him saying that he would not wear a bulletproof vest.

Those early reports were poor and lacking detail but until today I haven’t seen any individualized reporting… And after the question came up I've since tried to do more research. It seems several on this thread saw the same descriptors of him (as a RW candidate) yesterday, so apparently there was a lot of "catch-up" required.

But, yes, it does seem he was a Leftist candidate.

Ecuador presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio assassinated at campaign event

The bloody incident prompted Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso to request help from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Snip

Lasso vowed has vowed that the incident will not go unpunished, saying that “organized crime has come a long way, but the full weight of the law will fall on them.”

Thu Aug 10, 2023, 07:59 PM

Yes, both have some sordid history but the FBI is the premier investigative body in the United States. The FBI (it's in the name) regularly helps other jurisdictions, even internationally, with forensics and other investigative techniques when requested. As others have said, Ecuador requested help.

If you are talking about Chile, Allende, and Pinochet, that was the CIA. The CIA is notorious for "assistance" to right wing governments. The FBI, while having its own "not great" history internally, has not been known for messing around in other countries.
