Ron DeSantis would 'reverse' Joe Biden's designation of Grand Canyon national monument

Ron DeSantis told a crowd in Iowa that if he becomes President, he will reverse a Joe Biden decision to create a national monument at the Grand Canyon, a priority of Native American tribes.

During a Never Back Down meet-and-greet in Coralville, DeSantis said he didn’t know much about the President’s decision, but he was against it anyway on national security grounds.

“I don’t know the intricacies of it, but I would reverse it,” DeSantis said. “Absolutely.”

Earlier this week, Biden designated the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni — Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument as the fifth new national monument created during his term, a move that the White House says “protects nearly 1 million acres of public lands surrounding Grand Canyon National Park and conserves this majestic land for all future generations.”

That designation would block the area from being mined. For DeSantis, monuments take second place to the ongoing war against Beijing.

“Biden just did this thing where he declared a national monument, you know, where you had a lot of rare earth minerals. China is kicking our rear end with this, you know, they want to do electric cars and all this stuff,” DeSantis said. “Well, you get a lot of the stuff from China.”

No President has ever abolished a national monument proclamation. Legal analyses since at least the 1930s have concluded that the Antiquities Act does not authorize the President to repeal proclamations, nor is that power implied.

He uses very simple minded kind of verbs, "to do" is about as basic as you get in terms of verbs.

You can see more of his poor speech process here, he sounds more like someone in junior high:

“Biden just did this thing where he declared a national monument, you know, where you had a lot of rare earth minerals. China is kicking our rear end with this, you know, they want to do electric cars and all this stuff,” DeSantis said. “Well, you get a lot of the stuff from China.”

And then to top it all off he basically says he doesn't know what he is talking about:

“I don’t know the intricacies of it, but I would reverse it,” DeSantis said. “Absolutely.”

Even if DeSantis has some sort of expressive speech deficit, he is obviously very lazy.
This is a prepared speech and he could have done his homework and learned something about
the topics he is discussing. He could also have someone edit his speech to sound more
appropriate for someone running for President of the US.

I don't know what's wrong with him, but the stories from his time at Gitmo suggest he's a sadist. When he interacts with the media he sounds angry and dismissive. When he interacts with voters he seems irritable and dismissive. He doesn't bother to pretend to be interested or sincere. This is unusual for a politician.

The talk of "slitting throats" is gruesome. And disgusting because he was talking about American
federal employees and the military.

And yes his enjoyment of the torture going on at Gitmo is sadistic.

Yes he is long on ego, short on talent.

And he is lazy, he doesn't even bother to put forth any effort when in public.

He didn't dress up. His hair looks greasy. He has his usual scowl. It looks completely unlike the typical yearbook photos of seniors who are headed to Ivy League schools. It's hard to imagine him at an elite college. I imagine that his resentments grew, because he was probably lonely and unpopular.

Little social awareness or concern for others.

He obviously is very bright in terms of book learning, and scores high on standardized testing.
But the whole people end of life eludes him.

He is not suited for politics or leadership positions at all.

He should be in a different line of work where he just sits at a desk.

DeSantis is also lazy, he has always coasted by because he is smart.

He puts little effort into his job, but he does work hard at being mean, getting revenge
because he enjoys it.

This sounds like someone with an advanced degree dumbing down his vocabulary and word choice deliberately to reach his audience better.

I don't think it is well done nor would I expect it to be effective. But he does not want to come off like a Harvard Law elite when making stump speeches.

Of course, I could be wrong.

He has taken it way too far. So once again his social judgement is poor.
He cannot adequately assess the social environment.

The audience consists of adults with normal IQ and he sounds like he is talking
to a kindergarten class. If this is deliberate, then he is showing how much disdain
he has for the average voter and thinks they are stupid.

And he still exhibits his impoverished speech patterns and laziness.

Obama is a good example of how to speak to audiences.

I saw an early interview with Obama, just at the beginning of his POTUS run.
He was obviously very very bright, highly educated, sophisticated,
and reflected the rarefied air of the Ivy Colleges.

But then I saw him change to reach audiences better, speaking in a different way
and different tone. Obama still exhibited his high IQ and education, but did so
in a way that everyone could understand and relate to him. His speech content
was still quite rich, and he had an ability to community highly complex material in simple ways.
The complexity of his inner thought process made easy to understand. And he obviously
was obviously well prepared and had an incredible grasp of many topics.

They can't sink a mine shaft a quarter-mile outside the monument, go down 3500 feet to where the rare earths are, and tunnel horizontally to get to them? There are lots of people doing just that in Idaho who would disagree with you.
